TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana Urban Forest Council recently awarded the Vigo County Public Library the 2012 Outstanding Government Entity award for promoting forestry in Indiana.

The library has a history of supporting community groups and has worked with TREES, Terre Haute’s urban forestry civic organization, for more than 20 years. Recently the library helped sponsor the TREES’ Photography Contest.  This included providing space for judging the 150 to 300 entries, promoting the event, helping to hang and arrange the winning photos and hosting the awards ceremony. TREES and the Library will support the 2013 The Year of the River theme by using a “TREES and the River” concept for the next photography contest.

The library has provided meeting rooms for TREES committee meetings and programs, offering areas both outside and inside the library for recycling and Keep America Beautiful activities. Seedling giveaways and exhibits of new energy efficient cars have taken place on the library parking lot. Reusable shopping bags for Earth Day were offered from the library lobby, and patrons waited in line with bags disappearing within minutes. The library continues to provide information on TREES’ activities by hanging posters, placing literature in brochure racks and most recently, a barrel in the lobby to recycle tennis shoes.

The award nomination was submitted by TREES and presented at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Indiana Urban Forest Council at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park on Oct. 10 in Indianapolis.
