Bridge column: July 25, 2010

The next generation of bridge stars in the Valley are the 299ers of the Terre Haute Bridge Center. Margie Kintz is the current leader, just ahead of Connie Shattuck. These players had less than 300 master points at the beginning of the year. Show position belongs to strong contender, Mona Sternfeld. Joan Chervenko leads the rest of the top 30 who are Ruth Ann Tooloose, Charles Parks, Rick Kleinheksel, Charles Bryan Sr, Linda Easton, Bill and Nancy Shriner, Don Tooloose, Sharon Mason, Jim Jennings, Dr Jayesh Ramolia, Charles Bryan Jr, Susan McCarthy, Gretchen Weston, Maggie Oyer, Janet Page, Margi Knotts, Bob Logsdon, David and Mary Halsted, Bill Hawk, Arlene Luchsinger, Mark Minar, Marty Cornelius and Clint Baldwin

On the tournament trail; Joanna Hebermehl and Milt Van Reed placed first in section and third overall in open pairs and teamed with Dan Dorney and John Clark were second in a large Swiss Team event at the Evansville Sectional. Our Monday evening Fun Bridge game continues strong due to Laura Bright’s tutorials on bidding and play and Tana Holt and Mary Lunsford’s help in maintaining the fun atmosphere.

Winners July 12-17

Monday afternoon: first, Judy Harris and Sharon Winters; second, Janet Horton and John Clark; third, Margie Kintz and Connie Shattuck; fourth, Pat Price and Pat Koger; fifth, Mona Sternfeld and George Woodason.

Monday evening: Fun Bridge, first, Sunny Cohen and Bill Hawk; second, Bill and Nancy Shriner; third, Susan McCarthy and David Sively.

Tuesday evening: first, Jim Gormong and Don Florida; second, Janet Horton and Milt Van Reed; third, Jane Gormong and Fred Ervin; fourth-fifth, Arlene Luchsinger and Sharon Strassler and Joanna Hebermehl and Jim Dickey. First in B stratum, Mary Lunsford and Tana Holt; second, Connie Shattuck and Margie Kintz.

Wednesday: first, Janet Horton and Laura Bright; second, Diane Scott and Noreen Bryant; third-fourth, Nancy Hanley and Pat Price and Pat Koger and George Woodason; fifth, Marty Cornelius and Margie Kintz.

Thursday: first, Jim and Jane Gormong; second-third, Mona Sternfeld and Arlene Luchsinger and Charles Parks and Nancy Hanley

Saturday: first, Janet Horton and Mona Sternfeld; second, George Woodason and Pat Price; third, Mary Alice Spahr and Nancy Hanley; fourth, Charles Bryan Jr and Frank DeSanto.

The following games will be played this week in the Bridge Center at 303 S. 14th St. It is a non-profit club sanctioned by The American Contract Bridge League. The players strive to make everyone have an enjoyable time playing the great game of bridge. We welcome new players of all levels novice through expert. Monday: open game, 1 p.m. Fun Bridge, 6:30 to 8:30. Come early for a short lesson.

Tuesday: open game, 7 p.m.

Wednesday: open game, 10 a.m. Brown bag lunch at noon. Bridge class at 6 to 8 p. m.

Thursday: open game, 7 p.m.

Saturday: open game, 1 p.m.
