Benefit for Children’s Home kicks off Oblong Fall Follies

Oblong, Ill. — Community members and nearby neighbors look forward each fall to the annual Fall Follies in Oblong, Ill. The Oct. 27 event will mark the 46th annual festival.

Events include the quilt show, Little Mister and Little Miss contests, a band competition and a huge nighttime parade. Kicking off the day is the Spooktacular 5K, a benefit race co-sponsored by the Oblong Chamber of Commerce and the Oblong Children’s Christian Home.

The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. (rain or shine) in the city park and loop through town on the north side of Illinois 33.

Athletes of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Awards will be presented immediately after the event, and winners in the following age categories will be recognized: 20 and under, 21- 30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and 61 and over. In each age division, a male and female competitor will be honored.

Participants may also choose to walk the course in support of the ministry of the Oblong Children’s Christian Home. Competitors may bring children in strollers. There is no time limit, and organizers of the race encourage everyone to feel welcome.

“This fun run is one of our favorite fundraisers. There is just such a sense of community when folks show up in droves to walk and run the course in support of the Children’s Home,” said Amy Kemp, director for Promotions and Partnership Development for the Home. “Oblong is a wonderful community, and this ministry has been welcomed here for more than 40 years. This event is a pleasant reminder that we have been blessed here and will be for many years to come.”

Registration is ongoing. Interested athletes may visit the Children’s Home website at www.oblongchristianhome.org to review race details and register online. In 2012, the home will request $25 per participant, regardless of date of registration. Entry fees are non-refundable.

Each pre-registered participant is guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt and goodie bag. Additional shirts will be ordered for distribution on race day, but those registering after Oct. 10 cannot be assured their requested sizes. All competitors will be eligible for randomly drawn door prizes. Businesses in Oblong, Newton and Robison have contributed to the underwriting of the race.

The Oblong Children’s Christian Home is a nonprofit home that houses abused, troubled and neglected children.
