Dana plans community work day to plant trees

The Town of Dana is planning a community work day, starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 3, to plant additional trees for the Dana Urban Forest. Volunteers will be planting street trees in some of the areas that were disturbed by last summer’s installation of the sewer system.

Organizers are looking for any volunteers willing to help. The holes will be dug by machine, but the trees will need to be set and backfilled by hand. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Vermillion Co. Soil and Water Conservation District at 765-492-3705.

This is the second planting of the Dana Urban Forest Project. The first planting was in April when 18 trees were planted as part of an Arbor Day Celebration. With much care from nearby property owners and the Dana Tree Board and water from Crop Production Services, south of Dana, the trees survived this summer’s drought. The final goal of the project is to plant about 500 trees throughout the Town of Dana. When the project is completed, it will not only replace the trees that were removed by the construction, but will also complete the town’s tree canopy. Completing the project will take a few years.

The project is funded with a $10,600 DNR Community and Urban Forestry grant, a $6,000 donation from Duke Energy and a mix of smaller local and corporate donations. The project is still accepting tax-deductible donations. Checks may be mailed to: Vermillion County Community Foundation, PO Box 532, Clinton, IN 47842. Indicate on the check’s memo line: Dana Urban Forest Project.
