Families by Choice plans veterans fundraiser

TERRE HAUTE — During World War II the canteen was a big deal. Often a local place to socialize with music and women, the locations were intended to give members of the military a safe place away from base to have fun with light refreshments and an early evening.

In honor of that tradition and to make people more aware of the issues of homelessness, especially among veterans, Families by Choice will host a fundraiser from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Oregon Baptist Church Family Life Center (3/4 mile west of U.S. 41 on Oregon Baptist Church Road).

Music will be provided by local musicians, including a veteran who was once homeless.

Light refreshments will also be offered. Admission is $20 for individuals or  $25 for two. Those attending with members of the military — active or retired — will receive half price admission.
