ISU fraternity raising money for medical research

TERRE HAUTE — Hopping on a stationary bike as part of a 12-hour marathon at Indiana State University can help raise money for leukemia and lymphoma research.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity will host The Taylor Trudeau Cycle for Life event at the ISU Student Recreation Center’s cycling room.

Cyclists can sign up to pedal in half-hour sessions between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Each session is $10. The event is open to all members of the Student Recreation Center.

“As this is our first year, we hope to raise $1,500,” said Andre Brousseau of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at ISU. Next year, organizers hope to open the event to the wider community, Brousseau said.

“The goal of the event is to keep the wheels spinning for the entirety of the 12 hours as a symbolic gesture towards the memory of Taylor Trudeau,” Brousseau added.

Trudeau was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at the University of New Hampshire. “He was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2007 and died on Aug. 17, 2008 after a yearlong battle,” Brousseau said.

The Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of New Hampshire started the biking event three years ago to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma research. It’s an event that has spread nationwide to other chapters, Brousseau said.

Pi Kappa Alpha is the largest fraternity on ISU’s campus with 95 men, Brousseau said. For more information, contact Brousseau at abrousseau@indstate.edu.
