Brazil — Historical Society program on ‘Tex’ Terry
The Clay County Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the lower level of the museum. The guest speaker will be Ted Osborn. Osborn lives in Rosedale and has been collecting data, posters, photos and other memorabilia of Tex and Isabel Terry for over six years. He developed the Web site, texterry.com in 2005. Osborn is also a volunteer interpreter for the Dana-Thomas state historic site in Springfield, Ill. The Dana-Thomas is a massive prairie house built in 1902 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Osborn will be presenting a program on “Tex Terry, badman of the movies.” Edward Earl “Tex” Terry was born on Aug. 22, 1902, in Parke County, near the town of Coxville. As a youngster, he learned to use a whip to drive the mules in the coal mines in the nearby town of Rosedale. These skills helped him in his career, play roles in over 70 “B-Westerns.” Terry worked in the film industry with some of the biggest names of the time: Audie Murphy, Forrest Tucker, Sunset Carson, Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Although he was often credited in his films, Terry was easy to spot because of his distinctive look and style. Terry married his long-time friend and Hollywood agent, Isabel Draesemer, who managed the early careers of Buddy Ebsen and Hugh O’Brian. Draesemer is most noted for her discovery of Hollywood icon James Dean. In the 1970s, Terry was a big hit in area schools where he loved to perform his whip and toping act on stage and talk about his glory days in Hollywood. Terry died on May 18, 1985.
Join the Historical Society for a trip down memory lane.

Nursing honor society plans fundraiser
The Lambda Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing is celebrating its 20th anniversary by having a gala and fundraiser from 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the Landsbaum Center, 1433 North 61/2 St. There will be food, drinks, a silent auction and dancing. “Men of Note plus Claudia” will be performing. The event supports nursing scholarship activities. Atendees do not have to be a member to attend.
The honor society was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University. It started with six members and one chapter and over the past 87 years evolved to 451 chapters across the globe with more than 400,000 inducted members who are active in more than 90 countries and territories.
The honor society influences and changes the health of people by engaging the intellectual capital of nurses around the globe. Esther Acree was the founder and first President of the Chapter. She currently serves as Chairperson of the Sycamore Nursing Center and as Associate Professor of Nursing at Indiana State University.

PAW PRINTS: Want to adopt a pit bull? Here are some helpful hints
Despite the bad publicity, pit bulls can be very lovable and loyal family dogs. There is a great deal of confusion associated with the label “pit bull.” The most accurate definition refers to two breeds: the American pit bull terrier and the American Staffordshire terrier. Some people include other breeds in this group because they share similar head shapes and body types.

YOUR GREEN VALLEY: Conversation leads to imagining a world with no trees
I was recently asked by someone to imagine what the end of the world would look like. I consider myself a very optimistic person and have never imagined the end. The only image that came to mind was one often portrayed in a Hollywood movie, a scene where a big fireball comes down and everything is burnt to a crisp. The person I was talking with imagined the end would be a world where there are no living trees. This short but interesting conversation got me interested in what has and is plaguing trees.
