INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Tree Project partners with Groupon

The Indiana Tree Project and Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of Groupon have launched a local campaign to support and expand Indiana’s state forests.

This campaign is available on the Indianapolis Groupon Grassroots page (groupon.com/deals/grs-the-indiana-tree-project). Using Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the statewide tree-planting initiative in increments of $10. All funds raised go directly to the purchase, planting and maintenance of hardwood tree saplings, and partially cover the cost of purchasing land to plant additional trees.

The Indiana Tree Project aims to plant 1 million trees and create 1,000 acres of new forestland by 2016, the state of Indiana’s bicentennial anniversary.

“We are excited to employ the collective action model of Groupon Grassroots to raise support for The Indiana Tree Project,” said Bourke Patton, executive director of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation. “We look forward to creating new awareness for The Indiana Tree Project as one of the local organizations in Indianapolis to be featured on Groupon Grassroots.”

Each donor of The Indiana Tree Project receives a Tree ID number corresponding to where their tree sapling will be planted. Donors can log on to The Indiana Tree Project website (www.theindianatreeproject.org) and follow the planting date of their tree, find the acre where the tree is planted and track the tree’s growth using GPS technology.

Volunteer for Outdoor Experience

Volunteers are needed to help with Indiana’s largest hands-on outdoor recreation event, the Hoosier Outdoor Experience, on Sept. 15-16.

At Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, this free event of the Indiana DNR features more than 50 hands-on activities, such as fishing, a mock archaeological dig, and mountain biking. Interact with 120 grassroots partners and learn about how to enjoy the outdoors. Each day, the event opens to the public at 9 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. Volunteers and staff are on site at 8 a.m. for setup and an hour after gates close for tear-down.

Sign up to volunteer at 2012experiencevolunteers.
