Rockville Correctional Facility to begin PLUS program

The Rockville Correctional Facility announces the commencement of the Purposeful Living Units Serve program and is currently looking for volunteers, mentors and donations.

This re-entry program has two tracks: a faith-based curriculum and a character-based curriculum. Upon completion of the 12-16 month program, offenders will have developed skills and knowledge for daily living based upon a spiritual/religious foundation or an ethical/moral foundation, depending upon which track the offender chooses to complete.

Much of the curriculum includes self-reflection, personal responsibility, citizenship and community and restorative justice.

Offenders will not only be responsible for completing the core curriculum, but also performing 390 hours of community service within the facility and to the public.

The program also requires mentors for the offenders. These mentors can be graduates of the program and/or volunteers from the community. Eventually, there will be several classes instructed by PLUS graduate offenders as well as correctional facility staff. The PLUS program will be similar to the therapeutic community concept in that programming is 24/7. The offenders are held to a higher standard in behavior and participation in order to complete the program successfully and to obtain the reduction in sentence of 180 days.

The PLUS program is completely self-sufficient. All materials and program needs will be funded via donations and fundraisers. The facility requests that any parties interested in volunteering, mentoring or donating (time or money) contact Rita Steed, Community Services director, at (765) 569-3178, ext. 543.
