Purdue Extension Land Use Team plans seminar

The Purdue Extension Land Use Team is hosting a video seminar, “Communities Incorporating Climate Change Impact in Their Planning,” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 17. Remote video sites are available for viewing the live presentation at many county Extension service offices throughout the state, including Parke (fairgrounds) and Vermillion (Courthouse at Newport) counties.

The program will focus on what some communities are doing to incorporate climate change in their planning. Resources for communities wanting to incorporate climate change impacts into their planning will also be discussed.

Jeff Bergman, planning director for the city of Columbus and Bartholomew County, will share the work being done in Columbus and Bartholomew County with revisions to the Flood Hazard Area Standards within the Columbus and Bartholomew County Zoning Ordinance.

Information from studies and the study committee will identify policies for future development in the floodplains that are most appropriate for his area.

Bill Spohn, administrator, of building, planning and development in Auburn, will discuss the flood mitigation plan for Auburn. He will share how some of the goals of the plan such as minimizing flood damages to buildings and private property as well as how they re-utilized the floodplain as a community asset.

Molly Woloszyn, extension climatologist, Midwestern Regional Climate Center and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, will discuss the resources and information available through the Midwestern Regional Climate Center and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant programs for land use and climate planning.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters during the program.  

In addition, a link can be provided for those who want to view the seminar remotely at home or view an archive of it at a later date.
