Dana to celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees

TERRE HAUTE — The town of Dana will stage a community workday to plant the first trees of the Dana Urban Forest. The workday will begin at 9 a.m. April 28 with town officials making an Arbor Day proclamation to mark the event.

The rest of the morning will be spent planting street trees in some of the areas that were disturbed by last summer’s installation of a sewer system.

Organizers are looking for volunteers. The holes will be dug by machine, but the trees will need to be set and backfilled by hand.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District at (765) 492-3705.

For volunteers who sign up before April 23, lunch will be provided by the Dana Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary.

Trees planted at the event will be part of the Dana Urban Forest Project. The final goal of the project is to plant about 500 trees throughout the town of Dana.

When the project is completed, it will not only replace the trees that were removed by the construction, but will also complete the town’s tree canopy. Completing the project will take a few years.

The project is to be funded with a mix of DNR grants and local and corporate donations.

The project is still accepting tax-deductible donations. Checks may be mailed to: Vermillion County Community Foundation, PO Box 532, Clinton, IN 47842. Please indicate on the check’s memo line: Dana Urban Forest Project.
