Learn more about CASA at Vigo Library brown bag

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Public Library’s Brown Bag on Feb. 21 will feature information on CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Vigo County CASA recruits and trains community volunteers to be Court Appointed Special Advocates to advocate for children that have been abused and neglected. Volunteers are powerful voices that speak on behalf of children in the juvenile court system.

Specifically, CASAs research cases that they are assigned. When there is a hearing on the case, the CASA writes a report to the court with recommendations for the child. This includes recommendations for services for the child, as well as recommendations for a safe home.

In 2012, with 249 new “Children in Need of Services” cases in Vigo County, CASA served more than 500 children. CASA is looking for caring people who want to make a significant difference in the life of a child. CASAs must complete 30 hours of training.

The program starts at 12:10 p.m. and attendees may bring their lunches to eat during the program if they wish.
