MARSHALL, ILL. —
The Clark County Historical Society is planning a Christmas Walk featuring four Marshall, Ill., homes and historic Harlan Hall from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 9.
Headquarters for the event will be Harlan Hall, built in 1872 and currently housing the National Road Welcome Center and local historic exhibits. Christmas Walk tickets, directions and refreshments will be available there beginning at noon.
The structure, located at 603 Locust on the courthouse square, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designated as a Marshall Landmark by the Marshall Historic Preservation Commission.
Houses on the Christmas Walk will include the “Doll House,” built for the Doll family in 1879, and featuring numerous antiques. This gothic revival home at 515 N. Eighth St., has been designated a historical building by the Illinois Historical Society and as a Marshall Landmark by the Marshall Historic Preservation Commission. It is currently owned by Peggy Morris.
The second home on the Christmas Walk is the “Jones House,” built for novelist James Jones in 1953 following the success of his blockbuster novel, “From Here to Eternity.” Located at 1 Beech Street Lane, it adjoins the former grounds of the nationally known Handy Writers’ Colony, which included several other successful novelists.
The current owners, Bill and Beth Schulz, have kept the home much as it was in Jones’ time.
The third home is the “Lewis Home,” at 503 Chestnut, the former residence of John W. Lewis Sr. and John W. Lewis Jr., and their families. Both were prominent in local and state politics and civic affairs. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The current owner, Janice Lewis Marsh, is the granddaughter of the original owners.
The fourth home on the Christmas Walk is owned by Mike and Jo Sanders and is five miles east of Marshall on U.S. 40. This three-level home, built for the Royer family in 2000, features decorations, antiques and special collections.
Tickets are $10, but advance tickets are available for $8 at the Marshall library, Stone Builders in Marshall, the Mill Creek Restaurant in Clarksville, Darcie’s in Martinsville, Casey State Bank in Casey, Westfield State Bank and West Union library.

In addition to the walk in Marshall, the Casey Historical Society is planning its house walk on Dec. 2 in Casey.
