TREES Inc. shoe collection part of America Recycles Day observance

TERRE HAUTE — On Thursday, Nov. 15, America will celebrate America Recycles Day. TREES Inc. is extending the celebration and will start the festivities, on Nov. 12 and will continue through Nov. 16.

Earlier this year the TREES Inc. Earth Day Committee conducted a shoe collection drive. During that time about 800 pairs of shoes where collected at various locations around the community. The Earth Day Committee is back at it again with a last push of the year to reach the goal of collecting 1,000 pairs, in total.

“TREES Inc.'s main goal is to let people know to never throw unwanted athletic shoes in the trash, which end up in a landfill,” TREES Inc. member Joy Sacopulos said.

Many of the shoes previously collected where given a new lease on life. Those pairs that were in excellent or good condition were given to Terre Haute Catholic Charities and Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries. The same system will be used after the drive concludes on Nov. 16.

“There are a lot of ways to help your community and this is one of those ways. We are always grateful to partner with organizations who share our mission. A pair of shoes to a child or a senior can really show hope in their future,” Catholic Charities Agency Director John Etling said.

“Organizations that conduct donation drives, on behalf of Goodwill Industries, help provide work for people with work related barriers,” Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries Director Bill Tennis said.

Collection barrels will be out at the following locations all next week:

Vigo County Public Library main branch, Seventh and Poplar streets

Fire station at the west end of Plaza North

Fire station on West Margaret Avenue near Indiana 63

Fire station just outside of Deming Park on Fruitridge Avenue

What happens to the unfit shoes?

TREES Inc. will be shipping all shoes which are unfit to be worn, to the Nike Reuse Shoe program. Nike grinds the rubber from the shoe's outsole, to make track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles and playground surfacing. The foam from the shoe's midsole is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, as well as futsal fields. The shoe's fabric upper, is used in the creation of cushioning pads for facilities like indoor synthetic courts and wood courts.
