Speech specialist to speak to Parkinson’s group

TERRE HAUTE — Vocal therapy has helped people afflicted with Parkinson’s disease to feel less isolated and more engaged in everyday activities, and a Wabash Valley group will hear about that treatment this week.

Juliene Pendleton, a speech language pathologist in Indiana and Illinois, will speak to the Terre Haute Parkinson’s Support Group from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in Westminster Village at 1120 Davis Drive. Equipment at Terre Haute Regional Hospital allows Pendleton to use the LSVT LOUD technique of vocal therapy, developed by Dr. Lori Ramig, founder of LSVT Global Inc. in Colorado. It is named for the family of one of her former patients — the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment.

Ninety percent of the 1 million Parkinson’s patients in the United States suffer voice problems associated with the disease. They develop a diminished sense of the loudness of their voices. The therapy helps patients rediscover the necessary loudness they need in their voice.

Pendleton has more than 30 years of experience in schools, hospitals and nursing facilities. She completed LSVT training in 2009.

The support group is organized by retired Terre Haute minister Loyal Bishop. The monthly meetings (on fourth Fridays) are free and open to the public. Parkinson’s patients and their families are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Bishop at (812) 232-3207.
