PAW PRINTS: Animal rescues save lives

TERRE HAUTE — A rescue’s primary mission is to save animals, whether stray or from kill shelters, and most are non-profit organizations.

Through comprehensive adoption programs, which include spaying and neutering, they attempt to find responsible, loving and forever homes for companion animals.

Adopting a pet should be a lifetime commitment, and rescues believe that pets help people and families make the world a better place. Pets deserve stable, compassionate and loving homes their entire lives. The rescue goal is to help eliminate the need to euthanize any healthy, adoptable animal.

The Terre Haute Humane Society sends most of its dogs and cats to rescue. Cats and dogs of all ages have been sent to California, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts.

The surplus of cats and dogs (and their offspring) is being transported to many areas with strict laws regarding animals. In some communities, an expensive kennel license is required of people who allow their companion animals to breed. Often, free puppy and kitten ads are illegal. Aggressive spay/neuter programs have helped control local dog/cat overpopulation dilemmas, and animal abuse is typically not tolerated.

As a result of their success, rescues from other states have reached out to help problem areas such as the Midwest and Southern states.

Rescuing animals is a labor-intensive and time-consuming job. It requires a lot of research to discover and establish contacts. Once a relationship is created and a rescue agrees to take an animal, a transport must be planned in order to move the cat or dog from the shelter to the desired geographic location. More time must then be set aside for preparation and paperwork. Oftentimes, there are rescues that can take a dog or cat, but money is needed for necessary vetting, if the animal is injured. Frequently, money is needed for gas to be able to get the animal to the desired location.

The Terre Haute Humane Society would like to be able to save every healthy, adoptable animal that comes through the door. It costs more to save a life than to take a life. With your help, we can afford the difference. Rescue saves lives! Consider donating to the rescue fund.

You can mail money orders or checks (write in the memo: “rescue,” “cat rescue” or “dog rescue”) to the Terre Haute Humane Society at 1811 Fruitridge Ave. Terre Haute, IN 47803.

You also can purchase and donate gas cards. If you would like to sponsor an animal by donating to help him/her get to rescue, notate that cat’s or dog’s name and “rescue” in your check memo. Any amount will help.

If you have questions or you would like to speak with someone regarding rescue, call the shelter at (812) 232-0293.
