With January now history we can report new faces in both master point races, male and female.
Sharon Strassler leads the ladies and last year’s winner, Laura Bright is second, Tana Holt is third and Nancy Hanley fourth. Sue May leads the rest of the group who are Mary Lunsford, Pat Koger, Diane Scott, Joan Chervenko, Ruth Ann Tooloose, Margie Kintz, Pat Price, Joanna Hebermehl, Mary Lynn Siefert, Phyllis Peters, Noreen Bryant, Polly Hicks, Susan McCarthy, Nancy Shriner, Joyce McWilliams, Margi Knotts, Sharon Winters, Sonni Crawford, Sharon Mason, Marty Cornelius, Connie Shattuck, Ruth Erickson,Jan Harmening, Margaret Oyer, Gretchen Weston and Sharon Brockmeier.
On the men’s race for the first time in recent recorded memory, Fred Ervin is not leading. He has been under the weather. His favorite partner, Don Reuland, is now in control. Kudos go to runner-up, Charles Bryan Sr., Tom Roberts and Frank DeSanto are next. The rest in order; Tom Siefert, Fred Ervin, Charles Parks, Bill Shriner, Floyd McWilliams, Henjin Chi, David Sively, Milt Van Reed, Charles Bryan, Jr, Shafaat Dalal and Lou Harmening.
March 6 is the date for the annual membership meeting. There will be a carry-in dinner at 5 p.m. The club will furnish the main course of meat. Members are asked to bring a veggie, salad or pastry. Members are encouraged to present new ideas to protect and prolong our site for the preservation of the future of Bridge at the grass-roots level in the Valley. They will also be voting for new members to the board of directors.
The nominating committee has secured the willingness of the following people to serve on the board of directors: Tom Siefert, David Sively and Jane Gormong. Other nominations may be presented to the chair. We will eat at 5, meet at 6 and get back to our passion, Bridge, at 7. Be there.

TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Whip up a rhubarb surprise cake
This recipe comes from Ruth Baker. She sent a lot of rhubarb recipes. I have been putting them in the paper for the last three years. I’ve almost used most of them. Some I have used more than others. Mary Hunter also had this recipe. I have made this a lot. Gene really likes this. I use sweetener and yellow or white sugar-free cake mix. The only sugar I put in this recipe is in the marshmallows. Adjust for this. Our grandkids also enjoy this cake. Thanks to Ruth and Mary.

Ferguson land gift strikes conservation note

BRIDGE COLUMN: May 6, 2012
Bridge at the local club was exciting during the week of April 15-20. The excitement was generated by the fact that one of our members became a Life Master and a party was held on Saturday with a carry-in lunch. A total of nine tables played in a Swiss Team game honoring Joyce McWilliams. The game was directed by one of our finest players, Jim Gormong. The game was also a charity event with a portion of the player fees being forwarded to the charity of Joyce’s choice. She has chosen the ALS Association.

Cherries are one of my favorite fruits. This recipe, from Mary Hunter, is one I had never made before. I’ve always made a crust for the top of cherry pie, and this has a streusel topping.

The Sugar Creek Bee Club in Parke County is not short on novice bee keepers. One of their oldest members is 71-year old Wayne Price. He got into beekeeping in 1971. Price paints a landscape of the past that is much different than the world bees live in today; he says bees were common and everywhere.
