Greene County Marsh Madness Festival set

The Greene County Marsh Madness Festival will take place March 1 and 2. The event is a community based bird festival to celebrate Greene County’s natural resources, along with the Sandhill Crane and waterfowl migration at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area.

The festival will start with the Peabody Energy Kick-off Banquet, featuring Michael Sertle, Ducks Unlimited regional biologist, as the keynote speaker, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. March 1, at Shakamak State Park Group Camp Dining Hall. Tickets are $25 and include admission to festivities on March 2. Proceeds will benefit the Goose Pond Visitor Center. There is a $5 entrance fee for the March 2 events, but children ages 3 and younger are free.

Self-guided tours of the surrounding area and hourly guided bus tours from the East Cabin in Humphreys Park will be offered March 2. Also, wildlife experts will offer talks and presentations on various topics that include Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area, waterfowl and shorebirds, among others.

Leslie Grow, from the Dwight Chamberlain Raptor Center at Hardy Lake, will be giving presentations and showing several birds of prey, including a bald eagle. The day will also include a craft and vendor fair, kids’ activities and art contests, and bird house construction. Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center will host a showing of artwork by Robin Myers, a wildlife artist.

Earthjoy Tree Adventures will offer attendees the opportunity to safely climb in some of the large old trees through a system of ropes in Humphreys Park.

Ducks Unlimited will host a waterfowl calling contest, retriever demonstrations and a Sportsman’s Night Out event at Shakamak State Park.

A full list of times and locations of events and speakers is available at the Marsh Madness Web site: www.marshmadness.info.
