Feminine First to celebrate women in local history

TERRE HAUTE — Join local author and columnist, Dorothy Jerse, for a celebration of Women in Local History at the March 21 Brown Bag from 12:10 to 1:30 p.m.

Women leaders, still active in the community, will participate. The event will celebrate women who are holding, or who have held, a position which no woman has held before in our city and county. Panel members will include: Judith Anderson, Vigo County commissioner; Barbara Brugnaux, judge, Vigo County Court, Div. 5; Mary Ann Conroy, president and CEO of Terre Haute Regional Hospital; Lori Danielson, chair, board of directors of the Country Club of Terre Haute; Andrea Myers, athletic director at Indiana State University; Rhonda Oldham, chair of the Terre Haute Bar Association; Anna White, pilot with Britt Airlines; and Sally Whitehurst, campaign chair for United Way of the Wabash Valley. Panel members will respond to questions from facilitator, Dorothy Jerse, as they explore what it was like to be the first in their respective positions.

Other women who have held a “first” position in Vigo County (who might be attending) will be able to share their accomplishments at the end of the program.

The first Women’s History celebration took place in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1978; Congress made it an official national observance in 1981. Five years later Dave Buchanan of the Vigo County Historical Society and Dorothy Jerse of the YWCA initiated a local observance in Vigo County. Then-Terre Haute Mayor P. Pete Chalos proclaimed March as Women’s History Month in 1986. Later, the Vigo County Public Library became a third sponsor. Until now, individual women and groups of women, no longer living, have been recognized each year. For the first time, “Feminine Firsts,” the 27th observance, will honor contemporary women.

No reservations are necessary for this program and attendees can bring a lunch if they wish.
