Invasive plant workshop set for Nov. 10

NEWPORT — The Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District with Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development and Vermillion Rise Mega Park will be a presenting a workshop on identifying and controlling invasive plants on Nov. 10 in Newport. The presenters, Raoul Moore and Karen Staub, will also be discussing the ecological and financial impacts of not managing invasive plants.

Participants for the all-day workshop will meet at the north gate of Vermillion Rise Mega Park at 9 a.m. The north gate is off Indiana 63 just south of Newport. The morning will be spent indoors.

Following lunch the workshop will move outside for practical control demonstrations. The workshop is free, but reservations are required. Contact Meg Leader, SWCD, at meg-leader@iaswcd.org or 765-492-3705 before Nov. 5 to reserve a space.

It is important to control invasive plants. In natural areas, they impact wildlife by not producing optimum food and shelter to support healthy populations. In commercial agricultural areas, their presence will reduce crop yields and woodland/forest productivity. And in residential areas, they will spread easily to take over lawns and parks.

Workshop participants will be treated to lunch from the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Conservation Partners. Conservation Partners support SWCD activities that are not covered by government budgets.
