Electronic recycling collection day set

The Lincoln Heritage RC&D;, along with the University of Illinois Extension, Clark County SWCD, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Recycling for Illinois Inc. have coordinated efforts to stage a third electronic recycling collection in the county.

The collection will take place May 21 at two locations, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Clark County Extension parking lot in Marshall, on the south side of Marshall on Illinois 1, and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the USDA Service Center in Martinsville, between I-70 and U.S. 40.

There will be no collection in Casey because a permanent collection site has been established at the Casey Airport.

Electronic waste can be dropped off there Monday through Friday during business hours.

Individuals and businesses are welcome to bring items. Most electrical devices will be accepted, including computers and computer-related items, cell phones, VCRs, radios, stereos, speakers, power strips, TVs and microwave ovens.

There is a $5 disposal fee for computer monitors and microwave ovens. Fees for TVs range from $10-40, depending on the size.

An additional fee for broken TVs and monitors will apply. All other items may be dropped off for free.

No refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, etc., will be accepted.

Electronic items collected will be shipped to a processing site near Peoria. There, the items collected will be checked and a determination will be made as to whether or not they can be refurbished.

If computer equipment is refurbished, data will be removed and new software installed.

The refurbished equipment will then be provided to low-income families or emerging businesses for free or for little cost.

Those items not able to be refurbished will disassembled and all components recycled.

For more information, call the Extension Office at (217) 826-5422 or the SWCD office at (217) 382-4123, Ext. 3.
