Library receives posters detailing Lincoln’s visits

MARSHALL, Ill. — The National Road Association of Illinois has donated two framed, full-color posters to Marshall Public Library that detail Lincoln’s visits and work in Marshall and what he did in other National Road communities.

The posters will be a part of the library’s permanent collection and be on prominent display in the library particularly throughout 2009. The original copies of these posters are being placed in the Lincoln Room of the National Road Interpretive Center in Vandalia, Ill. John Goldsmith, executive director of the National Road Association of Illinois, expressed his appreciation to those at Marshall Public Library and the Clark County Historical Society for assisting in his research of this topic as he developed the posters. He says he was intrigued by his discovery that Lincoln had more close and lifelong friendships in Marshall than in any other community on the National Road. Goldsmith commends Marshall’s Lincoln Bicentennial Committee for planning Lincoln-related activities throughout the year.

The National Road Association has begun working with museums and libraries along the road to get more information to the public about the corridor’s history and significance. Marshall Public Library is at 612 Archer Ave.

For more information, call the library at (217) 826-2535 or visit www.marshallillibrary.com.
