Free trapper ed course Saturday


Raccoon State Recreation Area will offer a free trapper education course 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the property office.

The Indiana Trapper Education and Safety Course helps prepare individuals for safe and successful trapping. Each class provides information about the art of trapping furbearing animals; trap selection, preparation and maintenance; furbearer biology; scouting for furbearer signs; and fur handling.

Rules and regulations, safety, sportsmanship and ethics, as well as making successful trap sets for land and water, also are covered. All courses include demonstrations and hands-on experience to enhance learning.

Raccoon SRA is on U.S. 36 in Parke and Putnam counties in west central Indiana, 50 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles northeast of Terre Haute.



WTH woman to celebrate 90 years


Florence V. Mason of rural West Terre Haute will celebrate her 90th birthday during a private party with family.

She was born Nov. 3, 1918, to Charles and Josephine Dhom of Newton, Ill., and was a graduate of Brown’s Business College. She and her late husband, Herbert, owned and operated Southlake Beach Resort in West Terre Haute from 1946 to 1985.

Cards would be appreciated. Mason’s children, Herb, Bob, Carol, John, Jean and Steve, encourage written memories of time spent at Southlake be included with a card. Their goal is to receive 90 cards. They may be mailed to P.O. Box 5065, North Terre Haute, IN 47805.



Arts and Crafts Fair slated for Nov. 8


The Owen Valley Patriot Band and Guard Boosters are hosting an Arts and Crafts Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 in the auxiliary gym of Owen Valley High School on Indiana 46 in Spencer. This craft fair will benefit the entire band program.

Any type of art or craft items are welcome at this event. Booth spaces will be 10 by 10 feet, and will cost $25 with $10 extra for supplied electric. To reserve a booth, contact Gary Reed at glreed@localnet.com or (812) 829-7802 or Sandy Wood at swood58@localnet.com or (812) 829-2475 by Friday.
