REDNECK QUAKER: Excited turkey hunters report birds gobbling their heads off already

TERRE HAUTE — It’s “Turkey Time”. Didn’t spring come fast this year? Yes, a month early.

Trees are budding out, flowers blooming as well as insects and frogs singing their praise to the life giving warmth of the sun.

There are a lot of excited turkey hunters reporting birds gobbling their heads off already.

My prediction is the hens will be done mating before season opens, leaving the old gobblers brokenhearted and easy to call in. If we don’t have too much spring rain we should have a nice hatch also, making next year even better!

Kids, remind Mom and Dad your special hunting days are April 21-22, making sure you have completed your hunter safety course. You can hunt from one half hour before sunrise to sunset. Hours may differ on Department of Natural Resources properties.

You grownups can start your hunt on April 25 through May 13, one bird per person. Spring is a bearded or male turkey only.

Fall archery (includes crossbows) Dec 3-Jan 7 Statewide 1 per person regardless of equipment.

Keep these dates, for there is a lot of fun to be had at all of these banquets, with supporting your sport.

• Sullivan County NWTF will be held at the Sullivan Elks with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. A lot of turkey stuff can be won. Call Matt Landis at (812) 564-0145 for tickets and info. Be there March 31.

• Sycamore Ridge Struthers Banquet on April 14 at the Zorah Shrine Temple 420 N. 7th St, Terre Haute, IN 47807. Doors open at 5 p.m.; dinner starts at 7. Tickets are $55 single, $75 couple, $275 sponsor, $300 sponsor couple, and $750 corporate sponsor table, Contact Stacy Kueber at (765) 730-6145 or email simmspainting@aol.com.

All of these banquets are focused at the youth, as well as our veterans, who receive some honorary gift and the kids always win a gift.

The DNR and City of Terre Haute are teaming up for the fishing enthusiast. The lake at Third and Maple will be the new home for several trout. If you are 18 and over, you will have to purchase a license and a trout stamp to fish this lake, starting mid-April. Check with the Parks Department, before heading out, for the exact date. You’re allowed five trout per person a day.

The stocking of trout at the Chinook mine will not happen this year. The money from the purchase of trout stamps goes directly to restocking efforts. Trout do not reproduce in still water so catch them while you can.

One method is corn niblets on a small hook with a split shot so you can fish off of the bottom, and keep your line tight. Some use small spinner baits. Bring the kids so they can catch their first trout and make a memory of a lifetime.
