REDNECK QUAKER: Bobcats prowling woods of Parke County

TERRE HAUTE — If you find a big spotted cat with a short tail and pointy ears eating out of the dog food bowl on the back porch — leave it alone and don’t try to pet it! Yes, it could be a bobcat!

Brad Collings in Parke County has proven that, yes, indeed, there is a population of them at least in Parke County because he caught — not just one —  but two last week.

It was an accidental catch because they were caught in his raccoon and beaver traps. Yes, they are protected by law and, with conscious trapping on Brad’s part, they were not harmed and turned loose.

I have heard reports of sportsmen getting pictures of bobcats on trail cameras and sightings of them from deer hunters, but look at this picture and you will have no doubts. This is big news for the hunting community, so let’s all enjoy looking for these critters while doing them no harm like Brad.

He is true to his sport.

The West Central Indiana Wild Fur Aution, presented by West Central Indiana FTA Chapter 7F and Parke County Coon Hunters, will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 7 at Parke County Coon Hunter’s Lodge, 353 N Nyesville Rd, Rockville, IN 47872. That’s two miles east of Rockville on Nyesville Rd. Go north at the entrance to Billie Creek Village for approximately one mile. There will be two to four buyers present to bid on fur: carcass, skinned or stretched and dried. No frozen skins please. Food and drink will be available. From Dent Burget with Central Indiana Pheasants Forever:

“Happy holidays all. If you followed our tracks this year, you know we were busy and we have no plans for slowing down in 2012. In addition to our Sporting Clay Shoot in August and our Youth Hunt in October, we successfully held our Women’s Hunt in November in conjunction with the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area and coordinated by Ray Shepard. We also worked hard to plant several acres of habitat and secure ground for public hunting.

“Next year starts quickly with our first exhibit at the Indiana on the Fly Show on January 7th presented by Reel Women Reel Men at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This is an outstanding show with a multitude of great guest speakers (i.e. Georgia Pellegrini) that allows outdoor enthusiasts to look forward to the upcoming year.

“Thank you to all the individuals and companies that supported our efforts this year. Please visit our website at http://pfcic.org to see our sponsors and get updates on our activities.”
