TERRE HAUTE —
The classic Broadway hit “Fiddler on the Roof” is coming to Indiana State University’s Tilson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Monday as part of the Indiana State University Performing Arts Series.
Called “a universal story of hope, love and acceptance, a stunning, joyful and jubilant musical masterpiece” by the New York Daily News, “Fiddler on the Roof” opens with a view of the teeming village of Anatevka. The play uses main character Tevye to illustrate the challenges created by changing traditions. As Tevye’s daughters explore growing up and getting married, Tevye must come to terms with their strong opinions. While he doesn’t find this easy, Tevye’s great capacity for love and his respect for his family help him through.
Meanwhile, the world of Anatevka is changing. Intolerance forces the village’s Jewish families to reconsider their beliefs, and their very way of life. In introducing the idea of tradition, “Fiddler” proceeds to challenge a reliance on traditions as a way of life. Audience members will both laugh and cry along with the characters as they explore their changing way of life.
Performed by a nationally touring group, “Fiddler on the Roof” will be remembered by Terre Haute for its rich musical score, including “Tradition,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” The action is brought to life through the award-winning script, and accented by brilliantly costumed actors and rich sets.
As part of the Performing Arts Series, audience members will be treated to a special pre-show performance by local musician Louie Popejoy. This pre-show performance is free for all ticket holders and begins at 6:45 p.m. in Heritage Room outside Tilson Auditorium.
Tickets for “Fiddler” are on sale now through the Hulman Center Ticket Office, over the phone at 1-800-745-3000, or online through
ticketmaster.com. Prices begin at $18 for adults and $5 for youth. Indiana State University faculty and staff prices begin at $10, and all ISU students are admitted free with valid student I.D.
