Mystery dinner theater to raise funds for Camp Riley children

TERRE HAUTE — “The Murder at the Wooden Parrot Tavern,” a mystery dinner fundraiser to benefit Camp Riley, Riley Children’s Foundation will take place March 23 in the Terre Haute Holiday Inn at 3300 S. U.S. 41. Events will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7.

The mystery has a pirate theme and is presented like a 1940s radio show. Participants will read from a script provided at the event, so even they don’t know “who done it, what weapon, or where.” Local personalities who have volunteered to take part include Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett and wife Pam, Tom McClanahan of WTWO-TV, Kevin Orpurt of WTHI-TV, Marty “Party Marty” Combs of Crossroads Communications, Terre Haute City Councilman  John Mullican, ISU athletic director Ron Prettyman, and a couple of surprises. There will be singing commercials during the breaks just like an old time radio show. There also will be a silent auction and live auction with Colonel John Newman of Shadow Auction Barn.

Tickets are $25 and include an Italian meal and a chance to win $500. Reservations may be made by calling (812) 299-5606 or (812) 232-1912. A ticket with two clues to solve the murder mystery also may be purchased at Vick Welsh American Family Insurance at 1432 S. Third St. in Terre Haute, (812) 478-9500; or Champion Awards and Gifts, 2151 Lafayette Ave., (812) 466-0008. All proceeds will benefit Camp Riley for Youth with Disabilities.

Camp Riley is an overnight camp for Indiana Youth who have physical and mental disabilities. The cost for a child to attend a one-week session is approximately $1,800. The children who attend Camp Riley participate in activities such as swimming, archery, crafts, horseback riding, rides on a handicapped accessible pontoon boat, and they achieve goals that normal children take for granted. It also provides a reprieve for parents who must give 24 hour constant care to these special needs children. No child is turned away from attending Camp Riley because of lack of funds.
