Indy theater offers cabaret show

INDIANAPOLIS — Footlite Musicals will present its annual cabaret production Friday, Saturday and Jan. 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. This year’s production is Stephen Temperley’s “Souvenir.” Performances are at the theatre’s home, the Hedback Community Theater, 1847 N. Alabama St., Indianapolis. Curtain time for the Friday and Saturday performances is 8 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. for the two Sunday matinees.

“Souvenir” is the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a wealthy society eccentric, who suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was in fact incapable of producing two consecutive notes in tune.

As news of her terrible singing spread, so did her celebrity. Her growing mob of fans packed her recitals, stuffing handkerchiefs in their mouths to stifle their laughter — which Mrs. Jenkins blissfully mistook for cheers.

Cosme McMoon is Mrs. Jenkins’ accompanist. The play contains some of the great music from both the popular culture of the times (jazz, swing, Gershwin, etc.) and also Grand Opera (played mostly for comic effect).

Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for senior citizens (65 and over) and students (13 through college) and $10 for children (12 and under). Reservations may be made by visiting www.footlite.org or calling (317) 926-6630.
