RAMBLIN’ RECK: Clay City, Rockville, Linton remain alive

TERRE HAUTE — Another busy week of Indiana boys basketball sectional action is history, and three teams from the area now are preparing for regional games on Saturday.

Clay City, Rockville and Linton are the teams seeking additional postseason victories.

Clay City takes a 15-8 record into its game with Jac-Cen-Del in the Class A Martinsville Regional.

Rockville is the only unbeaten team left in the state, and the Rox take on Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class A Frankfort Regional.

Linton is celebrating its first sectional title in 31 years, and the Miners face Clarksville in the Class 2A Southridge Regional.

Hopefully, all of the teams will win those games and go for regional titles at night.

In Illinois, Oblong and Robinson were the last teams from the area to lose last week. The Maroons dropped a hard-fought two-point decision to Breese Central, which lost to Teutopolis 58-53 in two overtimes in the Greenville 2A Sectional.

Oblong lost to Nokomis 68-46 in the final game of the Altamont Class A Sectional.

We again spent the weekend in Greene County, covering the White River Valley Class A Sectional.

This tournament is one of the few in the state that was not drastically altered when class basketball began in Indiana.

Sectional teams come from Greene County or from nearby areas and, in most cases, have met during the regular season.

The biggest changes from 50 years ago are that Jasonville, Midland and Coalmont have become Shakamak; Solsberry has become Eastern Greene, and Worthington, Switz City Central and L&M have become WRV.

And, of course, Linton and Bloomfield now compete at Class 2A sites. We understand Bloomfield may return to WRV next year due to new enrollment figures released last month.

Crowds were excellent for Friday and Saturday games even though some fans went to North Knox to watch Linton and Sullivan in action.

Clay City won two hard-fought games to win and hopes to keep it going this week.



Tom-Cattin’ It — Carlisle’s fifth-grade and sixth-grade girls basketball teams won Sullivan County titles. The fifth-graders bested Hymera and Farmersburg to win, and the sixth-graders defeated Dugger and Hymera.

• Mt. Carmel junior Tyra Buss established a single-season scoring mark in Illinois of 1,285 points, averaging 38.9 points per game.

• The Indiana Pacers are looking better all the time but it appears Danny Granger may be sidelined again after returning to the lineup for a few games.

• Tucker Smith of Sullivan will play college soccer at St. Joseph’s. He is the leader in career goals for the Golden Arrows.

• Vincennes University begins men’s basketball district play this week. The Trailblazers lost twice in the regular season and have won 41 games in a row on their home court.

• Indiana University can clinch an outright Big Ten men’s basketball championship by beating Ohio State tonight or Michigan on Sunday. The Hoosiers should be a cinch to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

• Former Evansville and Army coach Jim Crews is doing a bangup job as interim coach of the basketball team at Saint Louis.

• Michigan was No. 1 in college football attendance figures last fall with a record 112,252 fans for six games as about 49 million fans watched college games in all divisions.

    At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
    Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
    Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

    “I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to not only play basketball with and against some great players during this tour, but to also share my Christian faith with those in the Ivory Coast,” Gant commented. “I’m looking forward to growing as a person by delivering aid to those in Africa and by sharing my faith with those we come in contact with. This will also be a great chance to continue to improve on the basketball court just before we start our workouts at Indiana State in the fall.”
