Tuesday’s prep basketball game

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South at Indianapolis Arlington

The action — Terre Haute South’s Braves (3-4) travel to Indianapolis to face Arlington’s Golden Knights (2-4) in a nonconference game.

The time — Varsity tipoff is approximately 7:30 p.m.

The airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.

The coaches — Scott Ridge is 11-19 in his second year at South. William “Chief” Benjamin, a retired chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, coaches the Golden Knights. Arlington is currently under state supervision and is being administered by EdPower.

Probable starting lineups — For South, 6-2 senior Jeffrey Turner and 5-10 senior Kevaris Gregory will start along with a trio selected from among 6-4 sophomore Timmy Herrin, 6-0 sophomore Conner Shipley, 5-11 senior Shane Stanley, 6-2 senior Preston Tofaute and 6-0 sophomore Spence Tofaute.

Arlington’s starters are expected to be 6-0 senior Jalen Steele, 6-1 senior Jerron Dewalt and 6-1 senior Rayshawn Baxter at guards with 6-6 senior Justin Vinciguerra and 6-8 junior Jrai Owens up front.

Key reserves — For South, 6-0 sophomore Tre Minnett, 6-4 sophomore Greg Newton and 5-10 sophomore Jared Wolfe. For Arlington, 5-10 senior Devin Ealy, 6-5 freshman Marc Owens and 6-7 junior Jrak Owens.

Team leaders — Turner is one of the state’s leading scorers, currently at 27.7 points per game, while Gregory is also a double-figure scorer for South. Dewalt leads the Golden Knights at 18 points per game, with Steele at 15 and Baxter at 9.

Recent games — South was very good on Friday, thumping West Vigo 86-51, but turned around on Saturday and lost 73-64 at Evansville Reitz. Arlington opened with wins over Indianapolis Washington and a good Chicago Julian team, but has lost four straight to Heritage Christian, Gary 21st Century, Fall Creek Academy and a 72-66 overtime decision at Lawrenceburg on Saturday.

Last meeting — Arlington won 70-65 last season, also at Arlington. The Braves had won three straight in the series prior to that, including a 69-50 win during the 2010-11 campaign.

Coaches’ quotes — Ridge on South’s play at Reitz: “We didn’t play well. Our man-to-man defense was pretty good in the first half, we just had too many turnovers.”

Benjamin on the Golden Knights: “We’re in every game in the fourth quarter; we just can’t finish. There’s always one rebound, one play, one defensive stop [that keeps us from being successful] … but that’s a good problem to have, because we should be 6-0.”

Ridge on the Golden Knights: “They beat us up there last year, so we know we’re in for a game.”

  • North baseball pulls away from South in sectional opener

In high school baseball little things mean a lot, and the crack in the door doesn’t have to be open very wide.
Terre Haute North burst through that crack in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday evening at Terre Haute South, scoring seven two-out runs and going on to a surprisingly easy 12-2 victory over the host Braves.
