BRAZIL —
Northview kicked its offense into high gear Friday night in a 64-50 Western Indiana Conference high school boys basketball victory over the visiting West Vigo Vikings.
Controlling the boards 35-21 with 6-foot-5 Ethan Whitson, 6-6 Jim Mace and 6-5 Daniel Kimball, the Knights earned their second straight win and second in conference play.
West Vigo, led by guard Kyle Stewart’s 17 points, scored the first eight points of the game. Stewart hit 2-of-3 3-point shots against Northview’s zone defense in the first quarter.
But Northview cut the Vikings’ lead to 8-7 at the end of the quarter, as first year coach Clint Weddle started mixing his size with smaller quicker players.
The Knights took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Joe Ball with 4:12 left in the second period. Northview closed the half with a 7-2 run to lead 23-17 at halftime.
West Vigo’s Stewart opened the second half with a steal and layup, but Northview responded with a 10-0 run.
The Knights’ lead reached 33-19 with 4:13 left in the third quarter on a three by Craig Peters.
The old West Vigo-Northview rivalry resurfaced in the fourth quarter. Two players had to be separated after a hard foul and double technical fouls were assessed to West Vigo’s Cade Lindsey and Northview’s Devin Clark.
West Vigo, who opened its season last weekend with a pair of conference wins in the road, never got closer than 13 points the second half.
