COLLEGE REPORT: Mayhew, Mascari provide fall highlights

Several dozen Wabash Valley athletes enjoyed successful fall seasons collegiately in cross country and tennis this year.

Highlighting those two sports were the individual dominances of Terre Haute North grads Zach Mayhew and John Mascari of the Big Ten Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference, respectively.

Both athletes won their conference meets, with Mayhew (a senior) placing 13th in the NCAA Championships and Mascari (a redshirt freshman) taking 60th place.

Several other runners enjoyed outstanding individual seasons, including Terre Haute South grad Clayton Harlan, who qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships that were run in Terre Haute earlier this month.

A total of 32 athletes and two coaches participated in collegiate cross country, while tennis had 12 athletes and two coaches.

Many of the tennis programs play exhibition-type matches in the fall, and have their regular season in the spring.

Marian College was ranked 25th nationally, but was upset 6-3 in the championship match of the Crossroads League tournament this fall.

Sophomore Sarah Potter of Terre Haute North — who will be joined by her sister, Anna, next fall at the Indianapolis school — went 10-2 in singles and 11-2 in doubles in the fall season.

Rose-Hulman placed second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference league standings and tournament this fall, with Terre Haute North grad Paige Cook earning first-team all-HCAC honors.

Cook finished 11-3 in singles play and 11-2 in doubles play this fall for the Engineers. She compiled records of 6-1 at the No. 4 singles position and 5-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Cook’s career singles record of 25-7 stands third all-time in terms of winning percentage at Rose, and her doubles mark of 31-11 ranks second.

In other tennis news:

• Former Terre Haute resident Nick Roby, who had an outstanding prep career at Park Tudor in Indianapolis, is a freshmen member of the team at Oglethorpe College.

Roby advanced to the final of his draw at the ITA South Atlantic Regional Championships after winning four matches over two days to reach the final round.

Roby won his first- and second-round matches by defeating Harry Muth of Sewanee 6-0. 6-1 and Birmingham Southern’s Lance Mengel 6-3, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Dillon Sullivan of Methodist 6-4, 6-1 and then knocked off Dudley Lampton of Mississippi College in the semis 6-3, 6-2.

The road ended on Sunday in the final, as Dylan Kady of Emory beat Roby 6-2, 6-2.

• Andrew Gregory is entering his third season as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at DePauw after earning the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

In his time at DePauw, Gregory has been involved with all aspects of coaching and recruiting student-athletes and has been an integral part of the planning of each practice. He conducts all strength and conditioning workouts for the squads while leading individual workouts with players.

Gregory’s presence within the DePauw program has helped the team reach the round of 16 in the NCAA women’s tournament in 2011 and 2012 and being ranked consistently in the top 30 of the men’s rankings in the past two seasons.

His other duties at DePauw include managing the indoor tennis center, teaching two to three physical education courses as a part-time instructor of kinesiology and being the Delta Upsilon house director.

Prior to coming to DePauw, Gregory was an instructor at the Wabash Valley Tennis Club in Terre Haute, where he led both private and group tennis lessons.

In his playing days, Gregory was a four-year member of the nationally ranked Olivet Nazarene squad, claiming the 2009 National Christian College Athletic Association national championship.

Gregory is currently pursuing his master’s degree in coaching from Ball State.

• Former West Vigo tennis coach Bruce Hartrich is in his first season as an assistant coach for the University of Indianapolis men’s tennis team. The owner of High Octane Tennis has been coaching since his playing days at Division I Monmouth (N.J.), where he helped the Hawks win a Northeast Conference championship as a freshman.

Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
