RAMBLIN’ RECK: Indiana State men receive votes in Associated Press top 25 poll

TERRE HAUTE — Wild and wacky best describe the week of college basketball that ended Sunday.

Indiana State had people talking after its 76-57 defeat of Creighton, ranked and leading the Missouri Valley Conference. Great game. Great crowd.

The Sycamores ended the week by beating Southern Illinois while Creighton lost at home to Illinois State.

Creighton dropped out of the top 25 in The Associated Press poll to 30th, and ISU got five votes to rank 40th. Creighton remains 23rd in the ESPN-USA Today poll.

The Sycamores now are tied for first place in the Valley with Creighton and Wichita State going into road games with Missouri State and Bradley and a home date with the Shockers.

One talking voice opined that Creighton’s losses may hurt the Valley’s chances of getting two or more bids to the NCAA tournament.

Illinois got the next big upset of the week, beating Indiana on a last-second inbounds play, 74-72, at Illinois. Illinois went on to beat Minnesota on the road to keep its NCAA hopes alive, while the Hoosiers got a nice victory at Ohio State. Illinois has victories over three top-10 teams and also beat Butler.

IU remains No. 1 in the AP list with Duke second. Duke is first in the USA Today/ESPN poll with IU second.

The longest game of the week was played Saturday night with Notre Dame beating Louisville 104-101 in five overtimes at Notre Dame. It took more than three hours to play.

The Irish beat Georgetown in a four-overtime event in 2002.

Another big upset came with TCU beating Kansas 62-55 when the Jayhawks shot 29.5 percent from the field and had 13 points in the first half.

Prep patter — High school girls basketball teams continue tournament play this week — vying for sectional honors in Illinois and regional titles in Indiana.

No Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference teams remain in contention in Indiana. Lawrence North and Terre Haute South both lost in sectional championship games. The Braves lost to Mooresville, which defeated Terre Haute North on Friday.

The two Indiana teams ranked in the USA Today poll meet in a Class 4A regional contest with Columbus North and Bedford North Lawrence meeting at BNL following the regional opener between Franklin Central and Castle.

Unbeaten Mt. Carmel took on Sullivan in the Newton Class 2A Sectional on Monday. Marshall faces Teutopolis in that sectional tonight.

Mt. Carmel junior Tyra Buss continues to set national and state records.

She got 35 points in regional action to establish an Illinois single-season mark of 1,217 points and counting. That’s 15 better than the old record of 1,198 held by Brittany Johnson of Olney.

Johnson also held the old Illinois career mark of 855 free throws. Buss now has 865.

The winner of the MIC boys championship will be decided this week. Carmel is in first with a 5-0 mark and North Central is second at 5-1.

Carmel plays Warren Central and Terre Haute North this week while North Central winds up league play against Center Grove.

Sullivan clinched the Western Indiana Conference title last week and Linton has just about wrapped up the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference title.

Clayton French of Linton qualified for the state finals in golf last spring. He has signed with Marian University to play college golf.

Tom-Cattin’ It — Vincennes University is 22-1 in men’s basketball after beating Lake Land 82-66. Kaskaskia handed the Trailblazers their only setback 62-54.

• Sullivan’s boys eighth-grade team recently defeated Brown County, Owen Valley and North Clay to take WIC honors. It also won the county title for the fourth year in a row.

• Published reports indicate Terre Haute South grad Cam Cameron could be the new offensive cooordinator in football at LSU.

• Aaron Killebrew of Evansville Harrison signed to play football at ISU last week. He scored more than 25 touchdowns last season and may play on defense and special teams for the Sycamores.

• Austin Peay is the preseason pick to win the Ohio Valley Conference title in baseball. Eastern Illinois was tabbed fifth.

n Indiana and Illinois now are tied 84-84 in their men’s basketball series.

When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.

But in the case of Terre Haute South’s Jackson Bertoli and Terre Haute North’s TaPring Goatee – the Tribune-Star’s Athletes of the Year for spring sports – there’s an air of unfinished business despite obvious recent successes.

When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.)
