TERRE HAUTE —
Believe it or not, the regular season ends for high school girls basketball teams in the area this week. Schedules are set for postseason play beginning next week.
Some conference championships have been decided but others will be decided in games to be played this week.
In Illinois, Marshall reigns as the Little Illini Conference champ again in the new-look league. In Indiana, Lawrence North defeated Center Grove 62-57 in overtime and is the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champ at 7-0.
Center Grove is 5-1 and plays Carmel, with a 3-3 league mark, on Tuesday. North Central finished at 5-2.
White River Valley shares the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship with a 7-1 mark. North Daviess and Eastern both are 6-1 and meet Thursday.
Sullivan and Owen Valley both are 5-0 in the Western Indiana Conference going into their game to be played Friday at Sullivan, with the winner being the 2013 champ and the loser taking second. Edgewood will be third at 4-2.
North Vermillion is the Wabash River Conference champ at 7-0. Riverton Parke is 5-1 and winds up against Attica, 4-1 in the league.
Key games are slated in boys conference games. Robinson has a perfect mark in the LIC and faces Newton this week.
Linton is the clear-cut leader in the SWIAC at 5-0 after beating Eastern Greene with Austin Karaszia scoring a career-high 33 points. North Daviess is second at 3-1, and three teams have two league setbacks.
Carmel is first in the MIC at 4-0. Lawrence North and North Central are tied for second with 3-1 marks. Carmel plays at Lawrence North on Friday; Terre Haute North is host to North Central the same night while Terre Haute South (1-4) is at Ben Davis (3-2).
Rockville is 5-0 in the WRC and Fountain Central is 4-0. The two leaders meet Friday and the Rox will be at West Vigo on Saturday. West Vigo’s alumni game is slated for Saturday afternoon.
Girls from the area were among the leaders in Indiana stats last week. Sara Dickey of Riverton Parke was tied for eighth in scoring with a 24.4-point average while Emily Bell of Terre Haute South was tied for 10th in blocks with 48.
• Super Time — The Super Bowl — or “Harbowl” as one publication calls it — is set for Sunday. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. and the pregame began yesterday.
A story in Sunday’s Tribune-Star noted that both Harbaughs had difficult decisions to make. Jim changed quarterbacks in San Francisco and John replaced Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator.
We might note that lead stories about Cam were published last week in USA Today and The New York Times.
Sports Illustrated says the Ravens will win 27-23. We like the Niners to go to 6-0 in Super Bowl games, winning 24-17.
Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts had a good game for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, which the NFC won 62-35. Luck was 12 of 19 for 205 yards and two touchdowns while Peyton Manning was 6 of 12 for 43 yards and one touchdown.
• Tom-Cattin’ It — Former Southport ace Louie Dampier will be honored this week at the school.
He went on to play with the Kentucky Wildcats and the Kentucky Colonels in the ABA.
• Scott Gardiner is the oldest rookie on the PGA Tour this season; he tied for 15th in the Sony Open and made the cut for the Farmers Insurance Open that ended Monday.
• Michigan and Indiana are tied for first in the Big Ten standings with 6-1 marks and will meet Sunday at IU. IU is at Purdue on Wednesday.
• Ad Meter has ranked all of the Super Bowl commercials and puts one featuring Larry Bird and Michael Jordan in a McDonald’s ad run in 1995 at No. 1.
• Teams coached by Tom Izzo of Michigan State have won 200 Big Ten basketball games.
• Quarterback Jared Barnett has transferred from Iowa State to Illinois State and will have two years of eligibility at his new school.
He threw for 1,825 yards and 12 touchdowns at Iowa State.

Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville
Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional. -

Terre Haute North might need an off night for anyone to catch them in the girls track regional at Evansville Central.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
While this year’s class may not rival that group in terms of name recognition and flash, it may produce just as many major contributors once the 2013 season gets underway. - Colts in wait-and-see mode for tonight’s NFL draft
