NEWTON, ILL. —
Marshall was a winner in high school boys basketball on the road Tuesday night, handing Newton its second defeat of the season 51-50.
Drew Morris hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play for the game-winning play. His second basket of the night erased Newton’s 50-48 advantage and the Lions held on for the victory, giving them an 11-5 record for the season.
Taylor Maurer scored to give Marshall a 41-38 lead to open the fourth quarter, but the host team rallied and went up 50-46 on two free throws by Lucas Stone. Maurer scored to make it a 50-48 game, setting the stage for Morris’s heroics.
Newton scored the last four points of the first period to take a 17-9 lead into the second period. The score was tied once in the second stanza.
Walker Berner hit two free throws to give Marshall its only first-half lead at 27-26, but Dylan Davidson’s 3-pointer was good to give the Eagles a 31-28 lead at the intermission.
Keegan Steele hit a 3-pointer to put Marshall up 35-33 and Steele’s bucket made it 39-35 in the third quarter, but Dylan Johnson hit a 3-pointer to cut the Lions’ lead to one going into the fourth frame.
Steele led the winners with 15 points and Maurer had 12.

Next — Both teams play Friday. Marshall (11-5, 4-2 LIC) plays host to Robinson. Newton (14-2, 4-2) is at Lawrenceville.

• Robinson 79, Casey 58 — At Robinson, the Maroons remained undefeated in Little Illini Conference games with Tuesday's victory.
Robinson has lost twice and will be at Marshall for league action Friday.¬
