Metro Roundup: Dorsett, Rex players honored in Prospect League postseason awards

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute Rex closer Nick Blount won one award and shared another and Brian Dorsett shared Manager of the Year honors as the Prospect League announced postseason awards Saturday.

Blount was named the Galen Wood Fireman of the Year and shared the Roland Hemond Prospect of the Year award with Springfield’s Matt Tellor. Tellor also was named the Mike Schmidt Player of the Year.

Dubois County’s Ryan Anderson shared managerial honors with Dorsett.

First-team all-star selections from the Rex, in addition to Blount, were shortstop Nick Johnson and center fielder Kyle Kempf. Nolan Earley, who played for the Rex in 2010, was the all-star right fielder.

Golf

• Roscoe leads — Ryan Roscoe has the lead after the first round of the Rea Park Club Championship.

Roscoe fired a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday, going 34-32 with seven birdies and one bogey in his round. He has a four-shot lead over Scott McVey, who was 37-33 in shooting 70. Mike Wright had the only other sub-par round with 71.

Charlie Kluesner and Travis Turpen are tied for fourth, both with 72, and five players are next with 73.

Ted Schneider is the leader in the senior division with 70 from the gold tees. Dave Nasser is second with 72 while Dick Stockberger, Ken Bosc and Tom Nicoson  had 73 to tie for fourth.

Luke Peoples is the leader in the junior division with 75, leading Drew Cahill by two shots.

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. today for the final round.

Volleyball

• Sycamores beat alumnae — At the ISU Arena, the 2012 edition of the Indiana State volleyball team defeated the alumnae squad 3-1.

“I thought we we had a lot of different lineups today. A lot of our freshman got a lot of good playing time and really produced for us and our returners were good leaders for us,” coach Trai Dahl said. “However, we still have a lot to work on before our first match next Friday.”

Set scores were 25-12, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17. The Sycamores will begin regular season play Friday at the DePaul Tournament.

Auto racing

• Stanbrough posts win — At Bloomington, Jon Stanbrough won one of the features Friday night in racing at Bloomington Speedway.

Stanbrough won the sprint main. Other winners were Bradley Sterrett in UMP modifieds, Winston Howe in super stocks and Lucas Jackson in hornets.

  • Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat

    Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now.

  • Carpenter wins Indy 500 pole

     Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
    The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006.
