Anderson's 1,000th point helps North girls beat West Vigo

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Senior Nicole Anderson topped the 1,000-point mark for her girls high school basketball career and Terre Haute North won its fourth game in a row, defeating host West Vigo 58-26 Thursday inside the Jim Mann Green Dome.

A point guard who frequently hangs out near the basket on offense, Anderson finished the night with an impressive statistical line — 27 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five blocked shots. She connected on 11 of 18 attempts from the field.

The 6-foot-1 Anderson, who will take her talents to Miami University of Ohio next season, reached her 1,000th point on an inside basket with 6:08 left in the contest, then added a free throw for 1,001 before coach Mike Allen replaced her with a substitute.

Other Patriots tallying in double figures were Jennifer Bendickson with 15 points and Lindsay Clark with 10, while Adrienne Pritchard grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Two layups by Anderson within the opening 1 minute and 4 seconds gave North a 4-0 lead. Later in the first frame, Shyanne Elkins converted two buckets and teammate Kylie Cardinal added one of her own to catapult the Vikings on top 9-7.

But a pair of treys by Bendickson helped the visitors seize a 13-9 advantage heading into the second period, then two fielders by Anderson, a rebound basket by Clark and a three-point play by Anderson increased the margin to 22-9 with 4:55 to go in the half.

In the final minute of the half, a rebound bucket by Pritchard and a 3 by Anderson boosted North’s lead to 33-15. The Patriots outscored the home team 25-11 in the second half to secure the victory.

“I thought we were pretty unselfish tonight,” Allen assessed. “We took care of the basketball [with only 13 turnovers]. In the first half, we knocked down some shots and got some big 3s by Bendickson and Clark. Then, obviously, Nicole in the post was taking care of business and was able to get her thousandth point tonight.”

Allen said he wasn’t sure how many North girls have surpassed the 1,000-point mark in school history, but he was sure Anderson is the first to do so in the 10 seasons that he’s been coach.

“They made big shots in the first half,” West Vigo coach Ryan Easton said of the Patriots. “They kind of kicked us in the gut a little bit. I thought in the first half, we played pretty well too.

“But in the first half, they shot lights out [13 of 23 from the field and 6 of 11 from 3-point range] and, in the second half, Anderson was on a mission. … She’s a stud.”

West Vigo’s top scorers Thursday were sisters Shyanne Elkins and Lexus Elkins with six points apiece.
