METRO ROUNDUP: IHSBCA to honor Northview’s McDonald

BRAZIL — Northview’s Scott McDonald will be honored next month as the District Coach of the Year by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The Knights finished 21-9 last spring, beating Terre Haute South 4-3 in the sectional championship game to snap South’s five-season sectional streak.

McDonald will be honored at a banquet Jan. 25 at Sheraton at Keystone Crossing in Indianapolis. Other district winners will also be announced, and five men — former major leaguers Billy McCool and Kenny Lofton, former Chesterton coach Jack Campbell, retired umpire Gene Butts and former announcer Dave Niehaus — will be inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.

• Patriots survive
— At Terre Haute North, the host Patriots nearly lost a double-figure lead in high school girls play on Saturday before downing Castle 60-54 in overtime.

North appeared to have the game well in hand with a 16-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but an injury and foul trouble helped the visiting Knights mount a rally. After two missed one-and-one opportunities left the door open, the visitors tied the game at the buzzer on a basket by Kelsey Garron.

Even though Castle got the first basket of the extra period, however, the Patriots outscored their visitors 10-2 the rest of the way.

Nicole Anderson had a game-high 23 points and Lindsay Clark added 12 for North, while Zuriel Sanders had 18, Rebecca Nunge 12 and Morgan Saiko 11 for the Knights.

• ISU sets three records
— At Charleston, Indiana State women set three school records Friday in the Early Bird indoor meet at Eastern Illinois.

Felisha Johnson not only broke school records but also Early Bird and Lantz Fieldhouse records in both weight throw and shot put.

Her weight throw of 75-feet-31⁄4 broke her own records on all three lists, while her shot put of 57-33⁄4 broke her own Early Bird record and a fieldhouse record previously held by Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois.

Stacia Weatherford bettered her own school record with a clocking of 8.48 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, also breaking an Early Bird record held previously by Paris Campbell of Cincinnati.

Other individual winners for ISU were Shalesa Smith in triple jump at 37-91⁄2; Carmelia Stewart in long jump at 19-2, seventh-best in school history; Katie Wise in the 60-meter dash in 7.61, sixth-best in school history, and in the 200 at 25.43, 18th-best at ISU; Shelby Higginbottom in the 600 in 1:34.43, fourth-best by a Sycamore; Leeann Michl in the 800 in 2:15.17; and the 4x400 team of Michl, Macey Black, Weatherford and Higginbottom in 3:50.66, an Early Bird record.

Weatherford also had the sixth-best 600 in school history in placing second behind HIgginbottom. ISU women won 10 of the 15 events.

In men’s competition, Greggmar Swift set a meet record of 7.79 in preliminaries and won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.83; John Mascari won the mile in 4:14.676; Dustin Betz took the 3,000 in 8:30.21; Robert Webb won high jump at 6-71⁄2; and Chris Fields won weight throw at 62-8, ninth-best in school history.

  • Luck having fun with his first OTAs

A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions.
