After rebuilding Indiana State, Trent Miles was introduced Monday as the new coach of a fledgling program at Georgia State, and immediately took aim on winning records and playoff berths for the Atlanta-based university.
Miles went 1-22 in his first two football seasons at ISU, before guiding his alma mater to three consecutive winning records. Georgia State has only been playing football for three seasons, and so far has a combined 10-23 record. The program’s founder and coach, Bill Curry, announced in August his impending retirement after this season, and GSU finished 1-10 in 2012. The school hired Miles last week.
At Monday’s news conference, Miles projected confidence that Georgia State could prosper as it jumps to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference next season, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Flanked by his family, Miles spoke to about a hundred fans, the newspaper said. A campus marching band played, as well.
He told the AJC he had not watched much film on Georgia State’s past games.
“I’m not worried about what’s on film, because we are going to do what we do,” Miles said. “We are going to be a tough, hard-nosed football team that plays as long as it takes to win.”
Miles also would not disclose the names of his assistant coaches, yet, the Journal-Constitution reported, but said they would know the Atlanta recruiting area and that GSU fans would be “shocked” by the names.
He also did not divulge his plans for offensive or defensive schemes. Instead, he spoke of goals.
“We want to teach them how to compete, we want to teach them how to win, and then we want to win championships,” Miles said, according to the Journal-Constitution.
Indiana State has begun the search for Miles’ replacement as Sycamores coach.

Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
