RAMBLIN’ RECK: Interesting postseason football awaits fans

TERRE HAUTE — The season has ended for most college football teams and the postseason has already begun, with some interesting games on tap this week.

Ohio State had something to prove and did so by finishing unbeaten but won’t be involved in the postseason. Otherwise, the Buckeyes might have played Notre Dame for the national championship.

That’s a neat thought isn’t it?

As it is, Nebraska plays Wisconsin on Saturday for the Big Ten championship in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. for the game that will be shown on FOX.

Marian University of Indianapolis  has won its first two games in the NAIA playoffs, beating state rival St. Francis last week 45-34, and will be at 12-0 Missouri Valley in the semifinals on Saturday.

Franklin and the University of Indianapolis were beaten in postseason play last week, Franklin losing to Mary-Hardin Baylor 63-17 and the Greyhounds bowing to Colorado State-Pueblo 28-7.

South Dakota State bested Eastern Illinois 58-10 in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs and will meet rival North Dakota State this week, while Illinois State is at Appalachian State.

Ball State was a winner in its final game and should be playing in a bowl game somewhere.

•  Classic draw set — Pairings will be made for the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic for prep boys teams today at a luncheon at Terre Haute South High School.

Terre Haute North is the defending champ and will be one of the teams to beat again this time.

Rockville already has won a tournament and will be another one of the favorites, if not the favorite, to cut down the nets at South next month.

Marshall finished 3-1 in the Capital Classic.

The Lions and Casey both should be strong and will meet in the Marshall home opener next week.

Bloomfield is not in the Classic for the first time since it began. The Cardinals are 3-0 after the first week of action, beating Union and then besting Paoli 47-46 and Owen Valley 48-45 in a tournament at Bloomfield.

The Cardinals will play host to Shakamak this week.

Paris competed in a tournament at Danville and went 1-2. The Tigers play host to Lawrenceville tonight.

Robinson was a winner in another tournament at Effingham St. Anthony. Aaron Siler and Derrick Nicholas made the all-tourney team.

White River Valley bested Shoals 50-33 in its first game.

West Vigo is one of the teams that will open the season this week, the boys and girls both playing at South Vermillion on Friday. The girls are at Sullivan tonight.

•  Tom-Cattin’ It — Terre Haute South quarterback Danny Etling recently received the Humphrey Award.

This award is given in memory of Paul and Del Humphrey. Paul played pro football for the Chicago Bears while Del was a long-time salesman for McMillan Sporting Goods and is credited for the invention and development of football helmets.

• Terre Haute North senior Anna Potter has been active in sports, competing in golf and tennis in addition to reigning as homecoming queen in football.

She intends to play college tennis at Marian.

• Former Eastern Greene standout J.T. Yoho has had nice success as a freshman on the Wright State basketball team. He recently was tabbed Horizon League newcomer of the week and was second in scoring for the team against Utah.

• Former Northview standout Austin Akers is the leader in assists for Eastern Illinois, 3-4 after beating Houston Baptist. Akers had a season-high seven assists in one game and had four against Houston Baptist.

The EIU women’s team is 2-3 after losing to ranked Dayton 105-42. The Panthers meet IUPUI this week.

• Former Terre Haute North coach Jim Jones got off to a winning start in his second run as boys cage coach at Springs Valley. The Blackhawks bested Mitchell 58-51.

• Indiana upset No. 1 seed Notre Dame 2-1 in an NCAA men’s soccer tournament contest played at South Bend. The Hoosiers were seeded 16th and next will meet No. 9 North Carolina.
