Sycamore women looking to bounce back from consecutive losses

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State women’s team was five minutes away from a 3-1 record but thanks to lackluster performances at both ends, the Sycamores lost to IUPUI on Tuesday.

ISU had 29 turnovers and allowed the Jaguars to shoot 52 percent from the field.

Following an intense practice Thanksgiving night, Anna Munn said the Sycamores are ready to leave that game behind them.

“After that game, it was a tough loss, people can say they blame the refs on the cause, but it was all us, having 29 turnovers. There’s nothing to go but up so we’re positive going into Belmont,” Munn said. “Once we buy into all of our coaches’ systems and believe in each other, come together as a team, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”

Munn, who was 4-of-16 from the field in the game to fall to 29.7 percent, said the Sycamores have to protect the ball and get it inside. Sophomore center Racheal Mahan is shooting 51.4 percent on the season after going 5-of-9 against IUPUI.

“One big thing we have to work hard on is getting the ball inside to our post players. They’re working hard down there. Us executing shots outside will open things up inside, so we’ll look to Racheal and Marina [Laramie] for the inside shot,” Munn said.

Coach Teri Moren said the Sycamores will learn from the loss, which was the first poor defensive performance for ISU.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow right now,” Moren said. “In the way we lost, it’s been a little bit hard to shake. We had a great film session and really have just moved forward and put IUPUI behind us. Hopefully we learned a lot of lessons from that game. Being up seven with five minutes [left], the understanding of how to close a game, even when it’s ugly.

“There’s a great desire to get back on the floor as quickly as we can and clean up some things. Our effort’s going to have to be better defensively. It’s about getting better and improving and not making the same mistakes.”

ISU welcomes Belmont for today’s 4:05 p.m. contest. The Bruins (2-3) won last season 69-69 in Nashville, Tenn. The Bruins’ losses thus far include a loss to No. 10 Georgia.

“A team that’s gone out and played some people. They beat us pretty good at their home last year. This is a very well coached team. They’re set oriented. They’re a pretty disciplined basketball team,” Moren said. “They have a shooter that can flat out fill it up if you don’t find her in transition. This is a good basketball team, very veteran, they’ve got a transfer from Vandy.”
