RILEY —
Scoring early and often, the Riley 12U baseball team assumed a 9-0 lead after two innings, seemingly building a solid foundation for an early 10-run rule victory.
Riley never achieved the 10-run rule threshold and were forced to play a full six innings, but they still topped New Palestine 10-3 in a semifinal game of the Central Indiana Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament early Sunday afternoon.
No. 1 seed Riley (3-0 in the tournament) will oppose third-seeded Connersville in the 12U state championship game at 6 p.m. today. Connersville beat No. 2 Whiteland 7-1 in the other semifinal matchup on Sunday.
“I just told the guys to stay focused, stay aggressive and just be ready for the [championship] game,” Riley manager Bryan Duncan said. “Drink plenty of water … it’s going to a hot day [today].”
Dylan Schneider put Riley up for keeps, as it turned out, connecting on a solo home run with one out in the first inning. That blast alleviated any potential jitters as the floodgates opened, Riley scoring six runs in the first, then three more in the second.
Trevor Trump followed with a single, then scored on a long single that bounded off the left field fence by Wyatt Joy. An error and wild pitch preceded a sacrifice fly by Cory Adkins for a 3-0 Riley lead.
Riley wasn’t finished in the first inning, however, as Jordan Woolard singled, then Jevan McCoskey plated two more runs with his single. A second New Palestine error made it 6-0.
New Palestine made a bid to cut into Riley’s lead in the top of the second. A single by Nick Rusche then two walks loaded the bases with nobody out.
Joy, Riley’s starting pitcher, fanned Kadin Hamby for the first out, then fielded a comebacker to the mound, tossing to his catcher McCoskey for the forceout at home, with McCoskey completing the inning-ending double play with a solid throw to first.
“That was a game-changer right there … it was a great play for us,” Duncan smiled.
Schneider started Riley’s second-inning rally, too, with a leadoff single, then stole second base. Joy walked, also stealing second, before Matt Wilson and Cory Adkins added RBI singles for a 9-0 lead.
Just as quickly as it scored at the outset, the Riley offense was stymied the balance of the game by relief pitcher Dawson Jones.
Jones retired the final batter in the second inning, stranding runners at second and third, keeping the score 9-0 at the time, then allowing just one additional run, a two-out solo home run by Trump in the fifth inning.
New Palestine plated a pair of unearned runs in the third inning, thanks to a pair of walks, a passed ball and a throwing error. Its only other run was a solo homer by Rusche in the fifth inning. Rusche was 2 for 3, scoring two of New Palestine’s three runs.
Riley’s aggressive base-running created five stolen bases, but more importantly it took the extra base at seemingly every opportunity.
“We have several players with good speed and good base-running [skills] and we try to take advantage of that,” Duncan emphasized. “The kids are playing very aggressively, which is what we need to do. If we have focus and aggression, that’s when we play our best.”
Riley utilized three pitchers – Joy, Zach Duncan and Trump – all going two innings apiece. By doing so, all three pitchers can pitch up to four innings in tonight’s championship game.
• 11U notes — Top-seed Irvington and Connersville will play in tonight’s Central Indiana Cal Ripken 11U State Tournament title game, also starting at 6 p.m.
In Sunday’s semifinal games, Irvington blanked Shelby County 7-0, while Connersville earned a 4-1 victory over No. 2 seed Whiteland.
Clay County was eliminated in quick fashion on Sunday morning, falling 7-6 to Connersville in the completion of a suspended game. Their game Saturday was halted with the 7-6 score in the top of the sixth inning due to lightning and the threat of rain.
Riley’s 11U team was eliminated after dropping its opening single-elimination game on Saturday.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
While this year’s class may not rival that group in terms of name recognition and flash, it may produce just as many major contributors once the 2013 season gets underway. - Colts in wait-and-see mode for tonight’s NFL draft
