Terre Haute North scored two runs apiece in the second and third innings, then held on for a 4-3 victory over Valaparaiso in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round of the Little League baseball state tournament for 10- and 11-year-old all-stars.
North will face Indiana Central in the semifinals at 6 p.m. today.

• North 12s eliminated — At Elkhart, Terre Haute North posted 15 hits but lost to New Castle 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the 12-and-under state tournament Tuesday.

• Cavemen 5, Rex 0 — At Hannibal, Mo., the Terre Haute Rex lost on Tuesday night at Hannibal, Mo., falling to 13-6 in the second half of the Prospect League schedule.
Kyle Kempf went 2 for 4 to lead the Rex offense, which was limited to five hits.
• Rex host tourney — The Terre Haute Junior Rex 13U team hosted a six-team tournament at Bob Warn Field last weekend that also included the Riley 12s USSSA team.
Each team won its first game in the bracket portion of the tourney before losing in the quarterfinals.
The Rex defeated the Indiana Irish 7-2 in the first bracket round led by three hits from Mitchell Howald, two from winning pitcher Christopher Latta and a double from Nathan Higbie.
The eventual tourney champ Hoosier Hills Titans, who finished the tourney undefeated, beat the Rex 5-4 with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Howald and Jase Glassburn each had two hits for the Rex.
Riley defeated the East Central Illinois Predators 12-8 in the bracket round, led by two hits each from Benji Downs, Cameron Cook and Eli Harden. Eventual runnerup Indiana Thunder eliminated Riley from the tourney.
The Junior Rex completed their season with the tourney, and have scheduled tryouts for next year’s 14U team on Aug. 5 and 12 from 12:30-2 p.m. at Bob Warn Field.

• ISU honored academically — The longest active streak in NCAA Division I continued this week with the announcement by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) that Indiana State earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 14th straight year.
That is the longest active streak among Division I schools and the second-longest among all collegiate divisions.
“Receiving this award for the 14th straight year is a tremendous honor,” Traci Dahl, Indiana State volleyball head coach said. “Every year, our GPA [grade-point average] is getting better and better. This shows how much this team as a whole is succeeding in the classroom.”

• Swift, Moore take second — Indiana State junior Greggmar Swift continued his preparation for the 2012 Olympics in London by finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2012 Flanders Cup in Belgium on Saturday.
Swift, who will race for his native Barbados in the London Olympics, finished second with a time of 13.81. He beat countryman Shane Brathwaite, who was third in 13.84. Adrien Deghelt who ran for a Belgium club team, won the event in 13.64.
Swift was not the only competitor in the event with connections to Indiana State. Former Sycamore Erica Moore continued to recover from an early-season injury and finished second in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:00.05. Moore currently competes for Nike.
Americans took the top three spots in the event with Maggie Vessey edging Moore at the stripe to take the win in 1:59.98. Vessey is a graduate of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and currently competes for New Balance. Tennessee’s Chanelle Price ran a personal best 2:00.15 to finish third.
Swift competes Aug. 7 at 5:10 a.m. EDT.
