KOKOMO —
The Wayne Newton Post 346 junior American Legion baseball team advanced to the state finals on Sunday, beating host Kokomo Post 6 7-3 in the regional championship game.
Cody Brock pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, Lane Dransfield capped a 3-for-3 day with a tie-breaking RBI and Greg Hannum followed that hit with another that drove in two runs in a decisive fifth-inning rally.
The team returns to Kokomo for the state finals, beginning with a 5 p.m. game Thursday against Newburgh Post 44.
In other baseball:
• North 12s win, advance — At Elkhart, the Terre Haute North 12-year-olds beat Jasper 14-4 in Little League state tournament pool play Monday and moved into the single-elimination quarterfinal round.
North broke open the game with a seven-run second inning, then got homers from Chris Taylor and Colten Panaranto in the third to finish first in its pool with a 2-1 record. After an opening win over Dyer, North lost to Ben Davis on Sunday.
North plays New Castle at 3 p.m. today.
Terre Haute North 14, Jasper 4 — For North, Colten Panaranto was 4 for 4 with a 2-run homer; Evan Funkhouser and Chance Cooper were both 3 for 4; Blade Pittman was 2 for 3 with a double; Chris Taylor was 1 for 1 with a homer; Avery Briddick and Brandon O’Neal were both 1 for 1; and Jason Mundell and Parker Bray were 1 for 2 and 1 for 3 respectively, each with a double.
• North 11s fall — At Greenwood, the Terre Haute North 11-year-olds lost 11-8 to Jasper in Little League state tournament play Monday, although it was an out-of-pool game that meant nothing to North’s advancement to the quarterfinals.
North begins single-elimination play at 5:30 p.m. today against Valparaiso. Games are being played at Franklin Township Little League.
Jasper 11, Terre Haute North 8 — For North, Cayman Hayes was 2 for 3 with a 2-run homer, Jake Lautenschlager was 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer, Max Glotzbach was 2 for 3 and Chris Nidiffer was 1 for 3 with a double.
• Sonic Braves finish on high note — At Indianapolis, the Terre Haute South Sonic Braves won all five of their games last week to win the 15u championship of the West Indy Baseball Bash.
The team finished 40-12 for the spring — as the Terre Haute South freshman team — and summer seasons.

Coaches are Shane Abrell, Cole Vicars, Chad Chrisman and Nick Arnold.
• Bombers 4, Rex 3, 13 innings — At Huntingburg, a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the 13th inning late Sunday gave host Dubois County a victory over the Terre Haute Rex in Prospect League play.
The Bombers tied the game with single runs in the eighth and 12th innings and snapped a four-game winning streak for the Rex. Terre Haute still has a three and one-half game lead in the second-half West Division standings.
Two of the Indiana State players on the Bombers were instrumental in all four Dubois County runs. Jeff Zahn singled and scored in the second inning and again in the eighth, Landon Curry’s two-out single tied the game in the bottom of the 12th and Zahn’s fourth hit of the game loaded the bases in the 13th.
The Rex play tonight at Hannibal.

Highlights — For the Rex, Patrick Chandler was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI; Nick Johnson was 2 for 5; and Kyle Kempf was 2 for 6. For the Bombers, Jeff Zahn was 4 for 7 with 2 runs and Landon Curry was 2 for 7 with an RBI.
Next — The Terre Haute Rex (13-5 second half) play today at Hannibal. Dubois County (8-10 second half) plays today at Danville.
• Manaea picked — Indiana State’s Sean Manaea has been named the starting pitcher for the West Division in the Cape Cod League all-star game Saturday at Harwich Point, Mass.
Manaea, pitching for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, leads the CCL in innings pitched (37 2/3) and strikeouts (66) and has allowed just six walks and 18 hits. He has a 3.1 record and a 1.67 earned run average (third in the league).
Auto racing
• Darland, Jones win — At Putnamville, Levi Jones and Dave Darland were winners Sunday in the final Indiana Sprint Week race at Lincoln Park Speedway.
Darland won his heat and led the final four turns to win the 30-lap feature with Kevin Thomas Jr. second and Bryan Clauson third. Shane Cottle led the first 26 laps and finished fourth.
Darland won for the second time in the U.S. Auto Club event, the only driver to win twice in the seven-race series this year.
Jones was fast qualifier, won his heat, placed fifth in the feature and won the Indiana Sprint Week title for the fourth time, tying him with Kevin Thomas for most wins in the event.
Jones placed in the top 10 in all seven races. His car owner, Tony Stewart, was on hand to watch the action postponed from last Thursday.
Jon Stanbrough remains the leader in the USAC sprint point totals, leading Jones by six points going into weekend action in Ohio.
Chase Stockon of Sullivan had his worst finish, 21st in the main. He finished sixth in the ISW final totals and is 10th in the sprint point totals.

Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now. -

A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
