Metro Roundup: Rose volleyball’s Williams wins HCAC Player of Week award

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman junior Morgan Williams has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for her efforts in helping the Fightin’ Engineers finish unbeaten last week.

Rose stands 5-0 on the season after sweeping four matches at the Eureka College Invitational on Saturday.The start marks the best opening to a season in Rose volleyball history.

For the week, Williams had 39 kills  with just three errors for a .419 hitting percentage. She also added a team-high 12 solo blocks among 20 total blocks along with seven digs.

The Engineers host the Rose-Hulman Volleyball Invitational Friday and Saturday at Hulbert Arena.

In other volleyball:

• ISU falls at home — Indiana State struggled on both sides of the net for the second straight game, losing to Valparaiso 3-0 (12-25, 19-25, 20-25) in front of 198 fans in the ISU Arena Tuesday.

The loss drops ISU to 5-3 on the season, while the visiting Crusaders improved to 7-1.

The ISU attack was led by a trio of sophomore with Morgan Dall knocking down eight kills, Auriel Armstrong seven, and Shea Doran six. Freshman Loni Mackinson had 20 assists and junior Kiya James 12 digs. Armstrong and Doran had two blocks each.

The Sycamores will play next in the Akron Invitational this weekend.

Soccer

• Rose women lose — Principia College relied on a strong offensive effort to score three first half goals and earn a 5-1 women’s victory over Rose-Hulman on Tuesday.

Rachel Publicover led the Principia offense with two goals, with Alicia Girbes-Pierce and Hanna Mehring adding one goal and two assists each.

Rose-Hulman senior Eli Baca put the Engineers on the board with her 19th career goal to move into sole possession of sixth place on the career scoring list. Junior Gloria Boxell  provided the assist with a half-field pass on the second half score.

Offensively, Baca and senior Molly Richardson led the Engineers with five shots each. The match featured a relatively narrow 13-8 advantage in shots for Principia.

Junior Julie Brennan (Indianapolis/Pike) recorded five saves in net, including two point blank saves in the opening half.

Prinicpia improved to 1-1 on the season, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 0-4.  The Engineers host Muskingum College on Sunday.

  • ISU's Webb wins heptathlon

    Indiana State’s Robert Webb captured the heptathlon Saturday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet as he totaled the second most points in ISU history while dominating the event. Webb scored 5,140 points, which is second only to former Sycamore Anthony Bertoli’s 5,189 points in 2008.
    Webb, a senior, established three more personal best efforts enroute to the overall victory as he ran 8.45 in the 60 meter hurdles and 2 minutes, 50.73 seconds in the 1,000 meters while also clearing 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault. Webb entered the second day of the event in the lead with 2,893 points after winning three of the four Friday events and setting personal bests in the long jump and shot put.
