South scoring duo shines in scrimmage

TERRE HAUTE — Danny Etling to Nic Keller. If Friday night’s controlled scrimmage at Terre Haute South was any indication, expect to hear about the Braves’ senior quarterback-to-tight-end combination often during the upcoming high school football season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Etling, South’s Purdue University-bound QB, passed for four touchdowns (two to Keller) and rushed for two more TDs amidst reasonably mild weather conditions. “I saw a lot of good things, but we got sloppy at times,” South coach Mark Raetz said of his squad’s offense. “We had quite a few penalties, quite a few things we need to clean up. We need to watch the film and break it down and fix it for next week.” Meanwhile, Northview coach George Gettle wished his defensive unit could have contained South more effectively, but he understood why some of the touchdowns occurred. “I thought our tackling was sub-par,” he told the Tribune-Star. “We weren’t attacking as well as I’d like… Secondary-wise, we got exposed a little bit, not doing what we were supposed to be doing. I feel like there’s some things we’ve got to shore up. “I think we’ve got a few things to work on, but I was fairly pleased with our effort tonight because I think Terre Haute South’s got a lot of weapons. They’re a little bit bigger than we are, a little bit stronger than we are and obviously a little bit faster than we are.” The scrimmage format called for each team to conduct 15 plays starting from its 35-yard line, 10 plays starting from its 10, 12 plays starting the opponent’s 35, eight plays for its reserves starting from their opponent’s 35 and eight plays for its reserves to start from the yard line of their choice. There were no extra points, field goals, kickoffs or punts attempted. After Northview went scoreless during its opening segment, South exploded for TDs on Ian Newton’s 1-yard run (set up by a 24-yard screen play from Etling to Tyler Seibert), a 43-yard bomb down the right sideline from Etling to Keller and a 38-yard aerial between Etling and Pedro Piloni. South’s varsity ended up with eight TDs for the night, plus one more produced by its reserve unit. The Knights eventually scored twice — one on an 8-yard strike from freshman quarterback Tucker Stewart to Hunter Reagan during the second segment and the other on a 9-yard scramble by Stewart during the third segment. “Early on, I think his nerves got the best of him,” Gettle said of Stewart. “But as he settled down in there, he did a really good job. “Offensively, as the scrimmage progressed, I thought our offensive line did an awfully nice job most of the time on the run. And in pass protection, they were pretty good.” From the South perspective, Raetz thought his defensive unit got a little sloppy at times. “We got sloppy toward the end, especially that last [varsity] segment,” he assessed. “We had a couple busts in our coverage where we had ‘em in a third-and-long situation. Those are things that I think we can get fixed and cleaned up for next week.” Both coaches were glad to see their players finally get to hit opposing players. “It was definitely good to get out and play someone else,” Raetz mentioned. “Going through two weeks of camp against yourselves gets a little old at times. We got a couple guys a little banged up [Friday], but I think they’re fine. Nothing serious. They’ll be back next week.” “Sometimes in practice, you’re going against the same guys,” Gettle noted. “They know what you’re doing. It’s nice to come against someone else who doesn’t know your calls and doesn’t know some of the things that you’re trying to accomplish.” The hitting will get more serious next Friday night when South opens its season at Indian Creek and Northview debuts at home against Indianapolis Broad Ripple. “We’re OK with where we’re at,” Gettle summarized. “But we’ve got a lot of work to do and that’s what we’ll start doing tomorrow morning.” Touchdowns THS — Ian Newton 1 run THS — Nic Keller 43 pass from Danny Etling THS — Pedro Piloni 38 pass from Etling N — Hunter Reagan 8 pass from Tucker Stewart THS — Keller 15 pass from Etling THS — Etling 11 run THS — Michael Watt 10 pass from Etling N — Stewart 9 run N — Ben Girton 33 pass from Stewart THS — Tyler Seibert 13 run THS — Etling 14 run THS reserves — Johnathan Rogers 9 run Next — Next Friday night, South will visit Indian Creek and Northview will play host to Indianapolis Broad Ripple to open their regular seasons.
