TERRE HAUTE —
A brilliant pitching performance by T.J. Decker and a pair of timely sacrifice bunts were the keys Thursday as Wayne Newton Post 346 opened Great Lakes Regional play with a 3-0 American Legion baseball victory over Green Bay, Wis., Ash Port Post 11.
Decker pitched a one-hitter, striking out six batters and walking just two, and his teammates gave him a lead in the top of the first inning that he never relinquished.
Tournament games on Thursday were seven innings instead of nine because of delays caused by rain in the area.
Kodie Girton greeted Ben Messenger, the Wisconsin high school player of the year, with a leadoff single and Daniel Marlow followed with a bunt. When it was thrown away at first, Girton came all the way around to score and Marlow reached third, from where he scored on a Scott West grounder moments later.
“When the grass is wet and you put the ball on the ground, sometimes funny things happen,” Post 346 manager John Hayes said after the game.
Wayne Newton’s second successful bunt came in the top of the sixth, and helped add an insurance run. Sam Wolf led off with a hit, was moved to second by Cody Thornton and came home on an RBI single by Preston Tofaute.
Post 346 is joined in the winners’ bracket of the eight-team tournament by Adrian, Mich., a 4-1 winner Thursday over Moline, Ill., and Pickerington, Ohio, a 2-0 winner over Madison, Wis. Host Midland and Northbrook, Ill., were playing the late game Thursday.

Highlights — For Post 346, Scott West was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Preston Tofaute had a hit and an RBI. Kodie Girton and Sam Wolf each had hits and scored a run apiece.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
