INDIANAPOLIS —
Entering Week 7 of the high school football season, only one team in the state had allowed more points than Lawrence North.
It took some time, but Terre Haute North added to the Wildcats’ woes on Friday night.
A week that began with the Patriots stunning perennial power Warren Central ended with North bullying the bottom of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, a 45-13 result that was Lawrence North’s eighth straight defeat dating to last season, all by double-digits.
“They’re a MIC team, they’re going to compete,” Terre Haute North coach Chris Barnett said of the Wildcats.
It’s also the third straight win in the series for the Patriots.
The Wildcats (0-7, 0-5 MIC) had allowed 355 points in the season’s first six games; only Class 3A independent Indianapolis Northwest (379 points) had allowed more.
But the Space Pioneers had at least scored in double-digits in all but one game before Friday night. Lawrence North, on the other hand, had been shut out three times and scored just 47 points all season.
The Wildcats looked more competitive than that early on Friday night. After the Patriots took the opening drive and scored on a 1-yard run by Kai Stratten, Lawrence North answered on its first possession.
Marcus Avery completed a 19-yard TD pass to Dan Scofield on fourth down. And when the Patriots were drawn offsides on the PAT kick — one of nine first-half penalties for North — the Wildcats opted to go for two.
Bad idea. Avery’s pass on the two-point conversion fell incomplete, preserving a 7-6 Patriot lead.
Terre Haute North (4-3, 3-2 MIC) dominated the second quarter, taking a 24-6 lead into halftime. The Patriots scored on all three second-quarter possessions, with a TD run by Brother Scank and a scoring pass from Chris Barrett to Austin Lewis sandwiched around a Zack Potter field goal.
After their first possession, the Wildcats settled for two punts and a failed fourth-down conversion before closing the first half with a kneeldown.
The penalties were not acceptable, Barnett said. But he said the effort was there from his players.
“I don’t think our guys were taking them lightly, they were playing hard,” Barnett said. “Just a lot of stupid mistakes on both sides of the ball.”
Things didn’t get any better for Lawrence North in the second half. The Wildcats’ first possession ended when they had to punt deep in their own territory. But the snap was fumbled, and Vasco Bilberry recovered the ball in the end zone.
Lawrence North would break into double-digits on Scofield’s second TD reception of the night, a pass from backup quarterback Caleb Pfeifer. But by then it was too little, too late.
Austin Lewis finished with 100 yards on four receptions for the Patriots, including a 49-yard TD pass from Chris Barrett II in the third quarter. Terre Haute North tallied 273 yards on the ground alone while holding Lawrence North to 181 yards of total offense.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
While this year’s class may not rival that group in terms of name recognition and flash, it may produce just as many major contributors once the 2013 season gets underway. - Colts in wait-and-see mode for tonight’s NFL draft
