TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South tried to make a mole hill out of a mountain — the mountain being Indianapolis North Central defensive end and Wisconsin recruit Darius Latham.
South didn’t have success in that mission. The Panthers defeated the Braves 24-8 on Homecoming night in a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference game.
South (2-5, 0-5 MIC) was unable to make consistent headway in the battle at the line of scrimmage Friday against Indianapolis North Central. Latham, an attention-drawing 6-foot-5, 275-pound load, and a herd of blitzing linebackers helped the Panthers hold the Braves to minus-8 rushing yards in the first half.
North Central (2-5, 1-4) built a 12-0 lead thanks to a punt block and 35-yard return for a touchdown by Jeff Harris.
The Panthers added another punt block and return for a touchdown in the second half as James Mitchell got a piece of the kick and Lucas Bucina went 35 yards for a score.
While South had its share of special teams gems — a blocked punt for a safety and some nice punting by Jeremy Patterson — the two big plays by the Panthers proved decisive.
The Braves held their own defensively against a 1-5 Panthers’ team averaging 10 points a game. But North Central still grinded out 86 yards on the ground in the first half, resulting in one fruitful scoring drive for the Panthers.
Offense was another story for South.
Through three quarters, South ran 35 plays and totaled 74 yards as quarterback Danny Etling spent way too much time on the ground at Bob Clements Field. Etling was sacked four times through three quarters but he was hurried or pushed out of the pocket at least 10 times. Etling finished 8 of 19 for 58 yards.
“Can’t have breakdowns in special teams, can’t have breakdowns in protection. We had a lot of breakdowns across the board tonight,” South coach Mark Raetz said. “We worked on that stuff all week. [The Panthers] have a very good defense. Their defense has been keeping them in games all year long. They held Ben Davis to 19, held Carmel to 24.”
South’s best offensive option was getting the ball in the hands of receiver Tyler Seibert, who busted loose for a 43-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
The senior’s burst around the outside of the Panthers’ defense made it a 12-8 game, the big play coming on the heels of a South safety. Seibert led the Braves with 88 yards rushing.
Still, South’s offense didn’t make enough plays to move the chains consistently.
“Our route running needed to be better. Our decision making needed to be better. I think we needed to get rid of the ball quicker at times. It was just an overall lack of execution at times that cost us,” Raetz said.
Timmy Herrin blocked a North Central punt in the end zone for the safety, and South took over after the Panthers’ free kick on the opponents’ 45-yard line.
In the second half, Braves sophomore running back Michael Watt showed his ability to hit the hole hard finishing with 58 of his 61 yards rushing.
“Michael’s a talented young player. He stepped in for Ian Newton, who’s been injured all week. Michael did a good job,” Raetz said.
North Central wore the Braves down with its power running game in the second half. Milton McClain ran for 124 yards on 22 carries in the game as the Panthers totaled 175 yards on the ground.

When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
