PREP ROUNDUP: Pats’ win earns honor for coach

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute North’s Chris Barrett has been named the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week, a program presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Barrett was selected after his Patriots upset Class 5A No. 6 ranked Warren Central 14-10. It was the program’s first win over the perennial powerhouse.

The Patriots joined the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference in 1998 and Saturday was their first win over the Warriors, a team that has been a staple of the MIC for 16 years.

Defense was the key for the Patriots, who forced six turnovers and had two goal-line stands to secure the four-point victory.

“Our defense has carried us all year long, and against Warren Central they played physical, hard-nosed football,” Barrett said.

This is his second Coach of the Week honor. The first came in Week 7 of the 2005 season when he led the Patriots to a 27-18 win over Carmel.

The 2012 season marks the 13th year the Colts are recognizing outstanding Indiana high school football coaches.

  • Luck having fun with his first OTAs

A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions.
